Thinking of starting one, anyone recommend anything? Mid 40’s now, can’t be doing football anymore
Need something a bit less taxing but worthwhile.....
Sure someone on here does Krav Maga.
Always fancied a go at fencing
Aikido would probably be the most useful of all the true martial arts to take up at your age in my opinion. There are quite a few properly run clubs in and around Cardiff.
Muay Thai is a killer. Way more taxing than football so I'd stay away from that one.
It takes tremendous discipline to get anywhere with a martial art
I enjoyed judo when younger but I have mates who are 6th dan black belt karate and the time and training they put into their art is staggering
Regular training , weekend training camps , healthy diet, no alcohol
It's a big ask and takes up a lot of their time
Tremendous rewards but you must have total dedication
Boxing is a good no nonsense martial art. Join a club and just do the training and bag punching. Don’t get in the ring. No one on this site can afford to lose any more brain cells.

I used to do Judo to a fairly high standard as a youngster ( Ive mentioned it on here in the past ), to take it up as a older person would be fairly hard on the body
My girls both used to do choi kwang do, its drill based with no / little contact, would be ideal for a older person to take up, the club my girls went to had a adults class after the one they did and it was very well supported
Brazilian jiu jitsu, seems to have a great sense of community built around it. Few boys I know are involved and from the outside it is like the are in a cult!. They absolutely love it.
I believe It is mostly 'rolling?' which is ground work/grappling and holds which means it is a high skill level with very little striking, so good for older guys and avoiding injuries.
aikido
Aikido
Origami ?
From what I've seen Aikido wouldn't help you in a street fight. This guy seems to sum it up quite well :

I was following the OPs comments.
He didn’t mention using it in a ruck More about exercise and confidence building. And it’s about using your opponents size and weight against them giving you the chance to fk off sharpish before they can do you much damage
If your planning to use a fighting form then imo as Dembethewarrior suggests Krav Maga will do the business or slappy jappy if you follow that particular path
