    FT: ENGLAND 2 - 0 GERMANY.

    Match facts

    Head-to-head

    • This is the third meeting between England and Germany at the European Championship. Germany won 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the 1996 semi-final, before England won 1-0 in the group stage at Euro 2000.
    • This will be the 13th meeting between England and Germany at Wembley. England won four of the first five such games (L1), including the 1966 World Cup final, but are winless in their last seven (D2 L5).
    • England and Germany have met seven times previously at major tournaments. Both sides have won two games each with three draws, though the Germans have progressed via a penalty shootout following two of those draws.

    England
    • This will be England's 300th international match at Wembley and their 77th at the new site since it reopened in 2007. The Three Lions have won 187 times at this venue (D73 L39), and remain unbeaten in their 14 Euros or World Cup finals matches at the stadium (W9 D5).
    • England have never won a European Championships knockout match in 90 minutes (D4 L2). Four games have gone to penalties, with England only progressing once via this method, against Spain at Wembley at Euro 96.
    • England's last four victories have all been 1-0, as many as their previous 26 wins had been. The only previous year they have had five 1-0 wins was in 1990, with two of those wins coming at the 1990 World Cup when they reached the semi-final.
    • Raheem Sterling has scored 14 goals in his last 19 appearances for England, after scoring just twice in his first 45 caps. All 16 of Sterling's goals for England have come in competitive games, with only Steve Bloomer scoring more with every goal coming in competitive games (28 goals, all in Home Nations matches).

    Germany
    • Germany have reached at least the semi-final in each of the last three European Championships. Since the tournament was expanded in 1996 they have reached at least the last four of the competition each time they have reached the knockout stage.
    • Joachim Low's side have conceded at least once in each of their last eight matches at major tournaments, since a 3-0 win against Slovakia at this stage of Euro 2016. Only once have had they had a longer run without a major tournament clean sheet, which was in their first nine World Cup matches between 1934 and 1954.
    • Ilkay Gundogan has scored twice at Wembley, for Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final and for Manchester City in the Premier League. He could become just the second player to score at the ground for a club side and the German national team, after Per Mertesacker.

Objectively speaking the German team is better than England's, but they've been all over the shop for a while now and with England's home advantage, I can see Germany capitulating. Cliche, but think the first goal will win this, neither team are good enough defensively to chase a goal and not be severely susceptible to conceding again. Let hell begin.

    2-0 England.

I think England have better players at the moment and will win even with a negative selection. Really think they would do far better with 1 of the 2 DMs axed.

    1-0

You seem to buck the trend by being a defeatist. Surely you should believe your Country will win.

England can have no excuses, they have everything going for them. Home game with 40,000 plus home fans roaring them on and very few opposition fans!

Just seen team Southgate has picked - 5 defenders, 2 defensive midfielders, no Foden, Mount or Grealish. No flair. Be prepared for 90 minutes of back passes. Nothing has been learnt from the games yesterday. Extra time and penalties loom but hopefully Germany will put us all out of our misery in the main 90 minutes.

Foden and Grealish should be the first names on that team sheet. They'd improve the vast majority of sides in this tournament. They can never win a tournament under Southgate , the mans utterly clueless. He's making Rob Page look like a genius

Southgate is always far too ultra-conservative. England will go out without a whimper and it needn't be that way.

Thats even more negative than usual.

England have such quality in attacking options and he comes up with that line up.

If they lose hes in for a lot of stick.

No Mount Grealish or Foden. But 5 defenders plus Rice who can play centre back and another DM in Phillips.

England has some of the best young players in Europe and he hasn't picked them. Foden, Grealish, Mount, Sancho and Bellingham should all be in the team.

According to FIFA rankings England are the 3rd best side in Europe (2nd best left in competition) and Germany 8th best in Europe. It's not unfeasible to make the argument that purely on footballing terms England should win and progress, but it does rankle a bit that they've been advantaged more than any other in set-up of this tournament.

There has been talk about Southgate studying Portugal and France winning the last two trophies and recognised dour football wins tournaments. I think they'll win tonight and likely win a tournament soon but really, really hope it's not the one UEFA handed them on a platter and they won the group playing such negative football.

I'll be looking forward to seeing Sweden play who are now just one of two sides left who finished above a host-nation in their group.

Walker is lightening quick and would have covered. Yellow was correct.

England on top now after a bright German start. Maguire should have scored.

Unless the player involved is a Welshman it would seem.

Ampadu & Wilson sent off for less than what Phillips just did to Kroos

Id like to see that Phillips tackle again. Looked similar to Ampadus.
