Something nobody seems to have picked up on is that according to The Guardian "The issue of an official name change for Wales was brought into focus last month when Robert Page’s side were drawn in the same Euro 2024 qualifying group as Turkey, who now compete internationally as Türkiye. The change came after the Ankara government called for the country to be known globally by its Turkish name".

Türkiye was approved and lobbied at UN level.

Noel Mooney's a tw*t who should stick to strutting around with the Qataris and keep his Irish nose out. He's UEFA's former head of strategic development so this is definitely a re-branding and will backfire.

Caerdydd, Abertawe, Casnewydd next and then welcome to the Cymru Premier Dinas Caerdydd fans because it's the inevitable conclusion. Do you think we'll be welcome in the EFL for much longer with this plonker in charge of the FAW? This is a really bad move for Welsh football in the long-term. I'd say it's a bad move for Wales as a nation too.

You don't support the Welsh language or the Welsh national team by walking around Cardiff in a man United, Liverpool or wolves shirt or spending your time on LFC social media

I don't get the reference to Turkey. Are they saying the Turks, officially and unofficially used to call themselves Turkey?

There's very different reasons why a Welsh person would happily call the team "Wales". For me it's being as I don't speak Welsh and the language is as foreign to me as Turkish. Rightly or wrongly.

Why confuse the international population anymore? Most barely know Wales as it is.

Ironic as the etymology of Wales is old English for foreigner, much the same as Walloon is in Belgium. Wales came about because in Old Saxon, these lands were Wealas - the plural for foreigners.

My argument is simple TBG. A change to Cymru will need to be politically driven and come from The Senedd. Once that ball starts rolling I argue that Cymraeg football clubs will have no place playing in the ENGLISH football league.

It would be the end of Cardiff City as we know it.

If the FAW want change - then bring it on, firstly you have to be pure Welsh to get in the squad none of this my great grandad visited snowdonia once upon a time. secondly all Welsh teams play in Welsh leagues like Scotland and Ireland.

Sludge, you're interpreting the use of 'Cymru' as a political and nationalist statement.

It's obviously a marketing tool and and an expression of identity.

If the Welsh FA ask their Red Wall members, I bet Cymru gets voted through? Not everyone of those who would vote for it, would be a raving nationalist.

It's all marketing, but it is a peculiar marketing strategy isn't it? The name Cymru is fundementally unknown around the world, whereas the name Wales is, even if people can't point to it on a map.

Domestically, Cymru will appeal to some, but I would suggest they already feel pretty at home watching international games and are welcome to call the team Cymru if they wish anyway. For the bulk of the country the team is Wales. I suppose a new name would intrigue some internationally, make them look up the countries history and all the rest. More likely though, people will wonder who the fk 'Cymru' are and make jokes about cum or something.

Just seems a strange strategy for me. Sometimes what works domestically doesn't work internationally or vice versa. In this case, I'm not sure the marketing would work for anyone.

Compared to Jonathan Ford, I'm increasingly questioning Noel Mooney's methods now. This strikes me as stiring a pot that doesn't need stirring.

Its part of the (imho) aggressive push of the language which is absolutely tied to Welsh nationalism.

Which I know they are doing for a fact, it’s happening with primary schools too in Cardiff. Trying to oust my kids out of their school to expand a nearby welsh language school, even though there is no proof they require it, they just want to do it. More cash per child being offered to be educated in welsh.
