Overheard an interesting conversation recently, when it comes to 'best in class' who dominated their respective sport the greatest ?
For example you can not say Messi / Ronaldo / Maradona because there is still not even a consensus on that today.
Many people would say Tiger Woods took golf to a level never reached before? however in terms of career wins Jack Nicklaus still dominates. So I maybe wouldn't accept that.
I heard Wayne Gretzky, is a great example of a single person that was further away from anyone else in their respective sport, however I do not know enough about ice hockey to have an opinion on that.
For me, possibly Michael Phelps? 23 gold medals! Is he the best example of someone who is further ahead of the competition in any sport?

Big Daddy on World of Sport, saturday Afternoon. Never lost a bout.
Jonah Lomu, not sure anyone has topped what he did
Serena for women's tennis.
In team sport, the Australian women’s cricket team are probably going to prove their invincibility again this afternoon - individual sport is so much harder to answer that question though. Ali dominated boxing in the sixties and seventies, but I’d say that was more down to force of personality, Woods was like nothing I’d seen before for a while, but I think the rest eventually reeled him in. Honestly, I’d go for Phil Taylor as the individual who dominated his sport for the longest.
Not a snooker fan but does Ronnie o Sullivan deserve a mention?
Absolutely, good shout.
It could be argued that it is impossible to compare people from different eras (Pele with Messi for example citing the quality of surface, football composition, footware etc)
but the thing is with snooker, the cues they use haven't changed for decades and I doubt anything has changed wrt the table surface, the size of pockets the same and ball composition i doubt has altered.
