So stupid for the police to lie about this. It was either a bare faced lie, or more likely a statement made when the person making it didn't have all information available. Instead of saying they don't know, they've blustered.

If the police were following them, it was probably justified. But that's all been lost behind the lie now.

Sheer incompetence by the police.

I don't know whether they were lying or not, but they've been extremely selective and careful with their wording.
