Re: Good jobs which no longer exist

My brother in law worked for Kodak in the photograph film and paper division for many years. It closed around 15 years ago and all were made redundant .

Actually the same person as Knocker Uppers (or Knockers Up) would often snuff out the gas lamps when they went around knocking on doors and windows to wake people up pre alarm clocks
      Who knocked up the Knocker-upper?

Sadly Bob I remember paper tape as well.

My first proper job in Nat West Bank when I was past the making tea and doing the post stage was inputting the days work into a massive NCR machine which encoded a blue punch tape which was sent to a computer centre for overnight processing.

In those days if you paid money in or took it out at your own branch your account would not be updated until the following day.

If you used another branch or bank it took 3 days.

No ATM's in those day so it was useful to build up a good relationship with your local corner shop do you could cash a cheque if need be.

It’s wrong for able bodied folk to park in disabled spaces, but there are also many drivers who hold a blue badge that shouldn’t.

Elderly homes wardens. They always seemed to be a fat purple-haired lesbian types that would sit in their office all day pissed on whisky while half of the elderly residents carked it alone. I got the impression the wardens job was to begrudgingly find the bodies a week later and call your family and say “Oh I am awfully sorry but Granny Jones died today. By the way she had an outstanding bill of 7k if you could pay that please”. Their timing was as delicate as their personality.

Hospital pisspot assistant. They weren’t the nurse but just the poor soul that used to bring those things to your bed that looked like an empty egg box. You’d empty your tadge in them and shout “Here you go love, I’m done. Come get some”. What a job.

The groom of the stool (or maybe Charles does have his arse secretly wiped).

The insurance man, the rent man, the man who emptied the shillings out of the gas and electric meters.

                        Train guard/brakeman

The ones that used to ride in the rear carriage of freight trains. Nice little log heaters they had in those things too.
