Thread: Traumatised after what I saw yesterday.

  1. #1

Traumatised after what I saw yesterday.

As I was walking along Newport Road near City Road in Cardiff yesterday, I spied what I thought was a fellow Bluebird supporter.

    How wrong was I?

The guy was wearing a Bluebirds baseball cap, all very well there, I hear you say.

However, he was wearing an Arsenal training top!!!!!!!!!!

    I mean, WTF?

Is there a hospital for the mentally ill nearby?

If you were traumatised by that perhaps you should sign yourself in.

Is anyone else listening to the freakonomics sports special podcasts?

There was an interview with a psychologist who was interested in kinds of group behaviour including religious groups, terrorist groups and sports fans. There were a lot of interesting parallels, I wonder if the OPs unease at seeing this unusual clothing combination comes from a similar place as a devout religious person seeing religious imagery used in a non traditional sense

Not from when I was a member. I'd have recognised him.

I suppose as an atheist I need somewhere to target that kind of feeling.

I guess we are hard wired with competing impulses to respect long standing traditions as well as exploring new things .
It makes a lot of sense from an evolutionary point of view to have that kind of dichotomy, as too conservative and we would never have climbed down from the trees, while too outlandish and we would have all killed ourselves a long time ago.
Many people think that religion, and other group identities like sports fans are an evolutionary side effect of this

He could have been, but all that champagne has clearly aged him if it is.
