Matthew Connolly to Hull on loan?

Hull City are trying to sign Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly, according to BBC Humberside Sport.
The Tigers have been in the hunt for a replacement for Tommy Elphick, who was recalled by Aston Villa at the start of January.

Matthew Connolly, who has fallen down the pecking order at Premier League side Cardiff, has emerged on their radar and Hull have held talks with him.

The 31-year-old hasn’t played for the Bluebirds this season and could be set for a loan move to the KCOM Stadium to get some first-team action. There is believed to be other Championship interest in him as well.

Connolly only played four times for Cardiff last season under Neil Warnock as they were promoted to the Premier League. He still has a year left to run on his contract at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Connolly started his career at Arsenal but never broke into their senior side. Instead, he enjoyed loan spells at AFC Bournemouth and Colchester United before he was snapped up by QPR in 2008.

He went onto play over 100 games for the London side and was part of their side who won promotion to the top flight in 2011. Connolly then spent time on loan at Reading in the 2011/12 season and helped them get promoted from the Championship.

Connolly joined Cardiff in 2012 and has been there ever since, albeit for a brief loan spell at Watford 2015 in which he was part of another promotion winning team.

He has got bags of experience in the second tier so could be a shrewd signing for the in-form Tigers.

Hull City are close to landing Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly on loan for the remainder of the season.

Head coach Nigel Adkins admitted yesterday that a deal had been struck to sign a Premier League centre-back and it is understood the target in City’s sights is Connolly.

The 31-year-old has been told he can leave Cardiff this month ahead of his contract expiring in the summer and the centre-back is known to be keen on sealing a move to the KCOM Stadium next week.

Connolly already has four promotions out of the Championship on his CV following spells with QPR, Reading, Watford and Cardiff and will be considered to be a direct replacement for Tommy Elphick, who was recalled by Aston Villa ahead of the transfer window opening.

The last 18 months have largely seen Connolly serving as defensive back-up for Neil Warnock and his only appearance this season came in the EFL Cup defeat at home to Norwich in August.

Connolly was an unused sub away to Liverpool in October but he missed last weekend’s FA Cup loss at Gillingham with a virus.

Adkins expects to conclude the capture of Connolly on Monday and then turn his attentions to landing a new winger and centre forward ahead of the January 31 deadline.

Hope it happens for him. He's been a great servant to the club and needs to be playing regularly. If he does go then we definitely need that new defender.

Paterson is our modern day Joe Dwyer; played all over the place for City (and Wales). Even in goals once.
