    No betting with credit card

    https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/u-k-bans...ling-1.1373445

The U.K. will ban gambling companies from accepting credit cards for bets from April 14, as the government continues to tighten regulation of the industry.

    Seems a good decision ?

Re: No betting with credit card

In the main yes, but people will find a way.

You can go on GameStop which bans you from all bookies online, ones you wouldn't have heard of, but you can still Chuck your mate 50 to put on the football on his account, as many people I know do.

Like with anything you'll only stop if you want to stop.

Commercial TV should also be warned to get its house in order, we’re bombarded with gambling adverts all showing ecstatic winners. A few contradicting this should be shown portraying the misery gambling can bring on families & individuals, the less gullible amongst us realise than there are far, far more losers than winners yet we’re bombarded with punters jumping for joy, it’s wrong. Also Just Eat, Go Compare & the meerkats can f*ck off as well

Bit of a standing joke in our house leading up to Christmas that one, my mrs actually shouted at the telly when that one was on, especially when I was threatening to get her one

its out of hand here in Sweden too. 21,00 onwards its back to back online gambling ads

Excellent move I think. Next step total ban on gambling ads on TV. Those who know how to gamble do not need ads - the ads are there for one purpose only, to make it seem exciting/glamorous to new punters.

Gambling ads, takeaway food ads etc, all online stuff, governments don’t want people using cash anymore. They don’t want a punter going in the bookies with £50 cash, doing £30, keeping £20 back for a takeaway later on in the evening, and when the cash is gone, it’s gone. They’d rather us rack up debt on debit/credit cards, spend what we haven’t got. Keeps the workers under control, being in debt, terrified to rock the boat at work when conditions deteriorate, can’t afford to upset management, out of work, out of a home etc. Thatcher used the same logic with ‘right to buy’, get the working man in debt and they’ll behave themselves whatever shit is thrown at them.

Opened an account with them quite recently just to place one specific bet (Plaid Cymru to win the Ceredigion parliamentary seat at 6/5) that I thought they'd mispriced. Transferred £500 to fund it to discover the highest stake they'd accept was a little over £200. Placed the bet then withdrew, or tried to, the rest back to the debit card I'd used 10 minutes before only to receive a message that to comply with anti money laundering regulations I was required to supply acceptable photo ID, a recent utility bill and evidence of how I acquired the dough. WTF?

I then did some reading to discover they're notorious chiselling b'stards - https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.paddypower.com - who will pull all kinds of strokes to keep punters' money.

I agree with your remarks. Although the debt slavery game is ubiquitous and we're all victims because without a single exception every country worlwide is mired with a huge national debt, including dinky ones like Kuwait that's knee-deep in oil, which citizens are compelled to service via taxes.

Almost a century ago Henry Ford, founder of the car company, warned of what the endgame, which we're on the precipice of, will be: 'The one aim of these financiers is world control by the creation of inextinguishable debts.'

I know it’s been debated on here before but the ‘almost forced’ use of cards is a way of pinpointing the habits, likes and most concerning the whereabouts of people at any given time, I know there’s the big brother of cctv surrounding us but using your card cuts out the mistaken identity that could happen with a camera, unless your card has been stolen you’re traceable to the second with every transaction.

I had exactly this issue with Ladbrokes.
    Opened account EASY deposited money.
    One bet. WON
    Tried to withdraw winnings.
Suddenly it is not possible without a nightmare of paperwork.
    So I wrote and complained.
Took 5 letters and chasing via the complaints body and 1 year and they returned my money.
Will never ever touch Ladbrokes again.

Abolishing cash is the wet dream of the 'financiers' Ford spoke of because once it's elbowed every financial transaction will be digital and traceable. Moreover, any and every tax/fine/penalty will be collected at source from people's accounts. The ultimate sanction would be to deny access to their own money, and ability to live, for anything a government may legislate for. On every occasion we don't use cash we're tightening the noose around our own necks.

Good move but too late for a lot of people.
I don't gamble but I've seen the harm it does.

I was shocked when all the betting ads on telly and plastered over the shirts, the warning signs about gambling addictiin and its affects on people and family life were already there and the league seemed to be safeguarding against it and having strict rules.
Now it's just a free for all.
    Feckin disgusting!

As SP has alluded to, all part of the cashless master plan.

Spot on, the message should be drummed into everyone, use cash at every opportunity, it gives you control over your finances not others. If you take £100 cash out for the night and your taxi home is £15, you know it’s time to leave when you’ve spent £85. You use your card and the brakes are off, your next statement shows you’ve spent £150 that night and you had to go and get £15 out the hole in the wall for your taxi, scary how much that’d mount up over a year.

Happened to me on a few occasions and can frightening how much you spend!
Far too easy to just get the card out.

Agree a concerted effort to use cash is a must.

Yeah cos walking to a cashpoint when you've done the 100 definitely won't happen.. it's the same for many of they take cash out or card, or if you leave it at home you can get cash off a mate that you've got to pay back, or you can transfer money from your banking app to a mate for cash.. point is if you want to spend it you'll find a way.

Same here in Denmark. It's bloody scandalous how it's allowed. It's non stop online casino adverts in the evening, and watching a game of football has a near constant ticker at the bottom of the screen with live odds.
I don't really gamble at all, but if you have a problem you would struggle to get away from it. Advertising it on TV should be banned.

    Am I missing something here?
Whilst I agree about the dreaded cashless society, today’s decision is stopping people using credit cards to gamble. That’s what we all want isn’t it?

Re: No betting with credit card

This will help people with shit credit (so that is good news) but anyone in remotely good standing (and I will concede that probably isn't a trait normally attributed to compulsive gamblers) can just do a money transfer or go to cash point and withdraw up to their cash limit and deposit in their current account. Or they can play on unlicensed (in the UK) offshore books without doing any of that. Point is, if you are remotely smart and completely ****ed in the head, you can and will get around it. They could go after the credit card companies for allowing transactions that are completely bogus, with fake codes and locations but they don't.

Could someone transfer money from their credit card to their bank card as a work around? If so, what changes really? Apart from the charge to move the money costing them more..

What a surprise, you know people who do this.
