Apparently he was involved with Russian oligarchs via his Ukraine connection, so that introductuces the intriguing prospect that it could be Clinton/Obama related? I would guess that he is the first target and the charges may be more to do with his financial dealings as a means of applying thumbscrews. Paul Manafort was Trump's campaign manager for several months in mid-2016 before he was replaced. He had dealings with the Ukranian president who fled to Russia when there was a coup/popular uprising (delete as appropriate). The special prosecutor seems very interested in his financial dealings during that period. Gluey will probably advise do your own research as it is all there!!
