Marcelo the most underrated footballer in the world?

He is not only the best left back in the world in my opinion, he is one of Madrids best attackers.

He is a class apart and he has consistently performed year after year. In fact I cannot remember him having a bad game, ever.

I'd have him in the ballon d'or conversation.

Sky Bet have Moussa bloody Dembele of celtic on their list but not the Brazilian:

He doesn't get enough credit he deserves. He has been in one world team of the year in 2011. Usually as a result of UEFA forcing Phillip Lahm in the team every year without fail.

    Honours:

    Real Madrid
    La Liga: 2006–07, 2007–08, 2011–12
    Copa del Rey: 2010–11, 2013–14
    Supercopa de España: 2008, 2012
    UEFA Champions League: 2013–14, 2015–16
    UEFA Super Cup: 2014, 2016
FIFA Club World Cup: 2014, 2016

    Individual
Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year: 2006
UEFA Team of the Year: 2011
    FIFA FIFPro World XI: 2012, 2015, 2016[31]
FIFA World Cup Dream Team: 2014
La Liga's Team of the season: 2015–16[32]
UEFA Champions League Team of the Season: 2015–16

I think we should appreciate him more. One of the all time great Brazilian full backs. Up there with Cafu etc.

    Fantastic player, couldn't agree more

He's right up there with Maicon too!

Did you just happen to read this?

When you say year after year, how fair do you want to go back with that?

For me he has matured recently into a world class footballer. He used to be a dirty, cynical cheat like most who ply their trade in La Liga. Which is a shame as this season he has been outstanding.

He had a pretty poor World Cup by his standards which is why a lot of people don't really rate him - fans are a bit thick and so are the pundits who work for Sky. I don't think he's on the level of Cafu and Roberto Carlos, but he's a damn good player no question about it. He wouldn't be at Madrid if he wasn't rated highly.

I didn't get to see much of him but when I did that one two move was unstoppable.

He's unfortunate to have been around at the same time as Lahm, Cole and Evra, otherwise he'd have been given a lot more attention and praise

I think he is rarely talked about.

When he is talked about like that Guardian article, about how he is underestimated.

    In it it says.

It is his tenth (season) at the club, and no one lasts this long without something. He’s still only 28, but it feels like he has been around for ever and yet it never really felt like he would be. Season after season, though, there he was. He arrived at the Bernabéu a 19-year-old. A decade on, on Saturday evening he departed having scored the late goal that took Madrid a step closer to a first title in five years and him to his 212th victory for the club – more than any other foreigner ever.

Could have cost Madrid the league by not cleaning out Sergio Roberto last week against Barca

Defenders and Goalies don't get Ballon D'ors. Buffon would deserve two before Marcelo got a mention if they did.

However, he is probably Real Madrid's most consistently good player.

I didn't used to like him very much, but now everytime I watch Madrid he is outstanding.

This season is his best by some distance, i don't know which player other people were watching for years and years but I must have been watching somebody else!

Re: Marcelo the most underrated footballer in the world?

Firstly, I don't think he is underrated, most people know how good he is. He is proably the best left back in the world and has been for a couple of years now and I think most people acknowledge that.

Also, it is only the past couple of years he's really been at his peak, before then he's always been a bit ropey as a defender and going forward was often a bit headless and didn't produce much.

When it comes to Balon d'or, it's always going to be difficult for a defender to win it, which may be an injustice, however in a time when Messi and Ronaldo are still around lets be honest, no-one is going to merit the title more than them, at leats for the time being.
