Clearly we are behind the curve on this. To me it would make sense to try to poach someone who has been working with one of the clubs who have been working really well in this area then at least they know what things to put in place to be successful. Clearly we would need to target someone more junior so the role was a step up, or from a smaller club.
The director of football or sporting director as it now seems to be all encompassing with a number of roles, the biggest being setting out a lasting and permanent vision for the club's playing identity.

I have watched some superb interviews with Stuart Webber of Norwich lately and he seems to be excelling both at Norwich and Huddersfield in this area in recent years.

A clear vision that is sustainable, that involves building a culture that is aligned throughout the club and at Norwich in particular has involved promoting youth players like Max Aaron's.

Both Dave Jones and Warnock are big no no's for me

I think you make an important point when you talk about the number of roles such a job encompasses - first of all we need to know what a Director of Football would do!

Earlier in the thread, I suggested Alan Curtis - I was thinking of someone who would play a leading role in player recruitment for the first team and act as a liaison between the club Board and manager when I suggested him, I don't see him as being a good idea really for the sort of job you're talking about.

i think Warnck and Jones are very similar in style and nither would promote young players. They do seem to be able to deal with the more troubled player but if you want a blueprint for the future then we need to look elsewhere?

I think we need to be looking at a coach who can bring so new ideas to the club as Blackwell and Jepson are too similar

It would show a limited understanding of what is considered an important role in modern football if we picked based on an older head who had pre-existing relationship with the club.

Can’t understand why no-one has put “WALES-BALES” name forward???

He can spot a player when it’s still in the womb

I think everyone was thinking about Wales Bales when discussing this thread but it was too obvious

It's not a difficult job, and for some reason people seem to be in awe of anybody who works in professional football. The truth is the industry is controlled by gatekeepers, so it's virtually impossible for the likes of you and me to have the opportunity. Besides that, I wouldn't want to be involved in football on a daily basis anyway. I have other interests that are far more rewarding.

I know loads of ex-pros, and half of them are a few sandwiches short of a picnic, but they would have no problem getting a job in football if they had the right contacts.

It's a game that consists of people running around a field chasing a ball. They are not employed for their intellect, so I'm not sure why you are trying to put them on a pedestal. And football is a closed shop. It's very hard to get in if you haven't been through the system. There are plenty of people who are very knowledgeable about football, but they would have little chance of getting a job without having played professionally.
