Great post, those young man were just sent to hell and not many returned, my grandfather was a surviver of the somme, and survived the second world war as a pilot, how modern people moan about stress in the modern era is beyond me. .

From a British pounds of view as well the first world war effectively ended Britain as the global superpower and left us in massive debt to the USA.

Standards of living amongst the middle classes in Britain have probably never been as high as in the present war period. Of course that was built on the backs of workers in the empire, so that's not necessarily a good thing.

I think that was WW2!!! Lend lease is what caused the debt.
