The Yanks have been trying hard to goad the Russians into attacking a US military target inside Syria but they've yet to bite. Either this is all synchronised sabre rattling or the neocons really do want to go toe-to-toe with Russia, Syria, Iran, North Korea and probably China too.

Russia has stated, albeit in couched terms, that if the Yanks or its allies step out of line west of the Euphrates (two-thirds of Syria) then it'll blow out of the sky anything that intrudes.
