View Full Version : Hospitals - Anyone ever spent time in one

Got a family member in hospital at the moment, and it was such a sad ward. It was full of older people, so they didnt have Ipads etc, so the people who didnt have visitors were just looking into space.

One lady tried speaking to the nurse, and she barely spoke. I understand its a hard and draining job, but a little bit of a coversation for someone who potentially has a few weeks/months left isnt too much to ask.

Anyways, my main point is, why arent their TVs? My relative was told the company who supplied them has gone bust. I didnt understand this though. Does a third party pay for the TV licence/running of them?

What is there to do, other than listen to the machines beep.

Never really visited people in hospital before, but I left thinking of those poor people being stuck with nothing.

NHS Hospitals are shocking places.
My ol Dad spent a fair bit of time in Hospitals before he passed away. Awfully dismal places.

Not the Hospital / Staff's fault, most of the NHS trusts are horrifically cash strapped.

The glib answer would be books / conversation, but a TV wouldn't be too much to ask.
Mind, a shared TV can be a problem in itself - I've seen some old dears get pretty riled up when they cant have Emmerdale http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/furious.gif http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif

Hope your family member makes a swift recovery.

NHS Hospitals are shocking places. They are some moody feckers mind. 1 in 10 might just smile once a week. The rest should be on constant suicide watch IMO.

Its very sad, there was a old lady, almost crazy looking because she had nothing to do. When I go again tomorrow, im going to take a load of magizines and books not being used.

I just assumed there would be TV's although not sure on what rules are with TVs, regarding the licence etc, but was shocked. They were saying most entertainment they get is the tea man and food. I guess with a TV if people want to sleep they cant, but still was a eye opener, and I feel for anyone who has to spend alot of time in hospital.

On a seperate note, anyone who has to visit a childrens ward (cancer etc) I dont know how you do it. The older ladies were making me feel bad.

Cheers mate

My ol Dad spent a fair bit of time in Hospitals before he passed away. Awfully dismal places. The one girl there looked beyond tired. Not sure how many hours they work. 12? But its such a hard thing, if a shop worker is a grump, you dont think too much of it, other than, what a ####. But I couldnt believe the nurse didnt speak. Im pretty sure most of the ward, are there to see their final days out. Think a little more effort would be nice. But then if the pay isnt great, mixed with long hours etc, it cant be easy. But as I said, was an eye opener.

Far to many old people with no life who are on the verge of dying getting their life needlessly extended so they can leave hospital, return to their care home where they will continue to stare into space and suffer from Alzheimer's. They along with all the chavs are the reason the NHS is a joke, sure its family but my grandparents spent far to much time and ultimately amounts of resources far outweighing any contributions they ever made to the NHS receiving treatment to extend their miserable existence by another month at a time, just like the unemployed chavs who seem to litter gp surgeries and hospital waiting rooms.

Not having a dig at you http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif just my observations of the past few times I've visited people at hospitals, each time a ward full of mostly old people who would be better off dead and usually a young pisshead type who has broke their leg etc. The nhs is a joke because they care for to maby **** hate that b.s. about how people have paid their taxes and should get treatment, the frequency some people are in there no wonder people complain, never been in myself...yet but when I have been there the staff don't seem that overworked, just busy.

I think we bear a responsibility too. We farm our old folk out to residential homes and old people's complexes rather than looking after them ourselves and having them in the bosom of the family.

There are quite a number of reasons, for which I won't bore you with, as to why I and many others believe there has been a radical downturn in standards.

Its very sad, there was a old lady, almost crazy looking because she had nothing to do. When I go again tomorrow, im going to take a load of magizines and books not being used. When they moved him up there they let us in to see him, as I think they thought he might not make the night. In there each child has one on one care with a nurse, but the beeping is going off around you. It was shocking but at the time you'd hear aa beep from a bed across the way, and I shamed to admit it, but there was a sense of relief that it wasn't the child we were with. Luckily most of the bleeps turned out to be nothing more than alarms to alert the nurses to alter things and not a flat lining type noise, but it was incredibly stressful being in there even for a few hours of each day for the week he was there. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Having spent time in intensive care and high dependency wards in the recent past the worst bit is hearing your fellow suffers take their last breath.
The first night in was horrific and seeing those empty beds the next morning was a horrible moment.
Not sure I was too bothered about TV after that experience .

I've spent a fair bit of time in hospital.
CRI (Emergency)-> Heath -> Rookwood for a total of 5 months when I suffered a stroke (at the tender age of 44! http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/sad.gif )
Two separate weeks in Heath when I broke my shin and kneecap.
Never really had a problem, though there's not enough money in the world to pay what the staff deserve.
Had those tiny TVs for my second stay, though I hardly bothered with it.
I had the good fortune to be in wards where other patients were able to hold a half-decent conversation, and I read or did crosswords for times they couldn't.
