Anyone on here live there or been there? Been offered a free trip by someone I do a bit of business with and was wondering what it was like. From what I've seen and read it looks a little bit dodgy. Just wondering if it was safe to go drinking in the nights etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

Forget jo burg as you will just be a prisoner in your hotel. Cape Town on the other hand is well worth a visit and plenty to do. You will still have to stay alert but a great place.

My wife is from Jo'burg (but I'm not Feedbacks mate). She says the reason some Brits have trouble out there is because they act like Brits (STUPID in other words). As long as people do a little research, avoid certain areas at certain times, act sensibly not waving a wallet of cash around or showing off your Ipad etc you can have a good time.

But, it is the violent crime capital of the world and of you're intending on going with someone with no street knowledge don't.

A couple of friends of mine were out there following the British Lions the last time they were touring S. Africa. They wanted to cross the road from one bar to another and it turned into an almost military operation with the doormen of each bar being involved in escorting them safely across the road.
One of the lads told me he felt safer sleeping in a tent during a safari than he did staying in Johannesburg.
They also said that on the bus journey into the city, they saw abandoned cars with bullet holes in the doors.

avoid Jo'burg, if you really must go you could hire some security, which is what a few do when they go with work

Wife says anyone offered a free trip to Joburg should consider it very dodgy indeed.

Wife says anyone offered a free trip to Joburg should consider it very dodgy indeed. The couple who offered me one of their places have stayed at my place a few times and they're genuine, nice people. After doing a bit of homework and a few of the comments off here I think I'll give it a miss http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif

I'm watching a TV programme right now and it stated that there are 10,000 car-jacking incidents in SA every year, more than one per hour.
