You could have some sympathy for people being offended by the cartoons yet find violence completely abhorrent.Radical, fascist ideologies don't permit any form of reasoned discussion or debate. To take an alternative view means that you are racist or unpatriotic or islamophobic or whatever name is most damaging for the circumstances.

I do see your point and of course, people will always interpret questions in different ways.. but 'sympathy for the motive behind the attack', to me is largely the same as having sympathy for the attack, because 'the motive' by definition is the reason for the attack. We can argue about whether a magazine should or shouldn't produce an image of Mohammed (I don't really greatly understand the benefits of doing so) but even an ounce of a suggestion that a violent response to this is acceptable needs to be 100% condemned.

Let's be clear. 27% of those surveyed refused to condemn a violent reaction to images of mohammed. People in Paris were shot in cold blood for goodness sake. It's like 27% of people thinking the Holocaust wasn't a bad thing.Consider this: British Marine Alexander Blackman was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison (commuted on appeal, I believe) for killing an unarmed and seriously wounded enemy combatant. There was a significant outpouring of outrage at the sentence, with many expressing the opinion that this murder was justified and the sentence should be reversed. Do you conclude that the majority of British citizens' refusal to condemn his actions "completely unacceptable in civilised society"? He shot the man in cold blood for goodness sake. It's like the majority of Brits thinking the Holocaust wasn't a bad thing. (sound familiar?)
