I've seen some last minute deals and fancy a recharge. Checked the travel advice and some obvious no go areas near borders but the coast looks pretty safe.

Thanks for any responses.

Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt all have no go zones but the holiday zones are fine.

Went to Hannamet about 4 years ago. Make sure you get a good hotel and that's not much outside although the harbour area is lovely. You det hassled there to go in shops, restaurants and by locals tryng to befriend you claiming they are your hotel chef.

But I thought it was telling when the bus driver asked who had been before. Not one put their hand up. On the return journey to the airport we were asked would we return. Not one said they would. My hotel was awful - a 4 star where the rats were bigger than the cats, where staff fought each other to carry your bags for tips and the beach constantly being bombarded by people selling watches, hats and other stuff you would not want to buy. Exploring further afield into Tunis using public transport I felt unsafe and the atmosphere hostile. I would never go back and others on the bus felt the same. But you might think differently. There is probably little point in asking what others think as we are all different. Possibly if you like hanging around the the beach then it might be for you but that is not appealing to everyone.

Thanks for any responses.Agree with that. I had a reasonable holiday but wouldn't go back. Turkey and Egypt are far better for that type of holiday.

I'm literally there now.

It absolutely all depends on the hotel you get. The hotels can be fantastic but the surrounding areas mainly look like Baghdad.

I'd recommend "Sahara Beach Resort" between Sousse & Monastir (the hotel I'm at now)...Staff are all friendly, they will learn your usual order/likes etc at the bars (all inclusive), and help you in any way they can.

Transport on trains between Monastir & Sousse is ok...extremely cheap (about 30p). Taxis are cheap but most aren't the nicest cars to sit in.

Outside the hotels there isn't too much to do. You'll get tired of the medinas (markets) rather quickly as every shop owner will pester you to get you into their shop, and they all have pretty much the same array of belts, bags, rugs & trainers. Did Sousse medina in 30 mins & Monastir's medina in less. The Roman amphitheatre at El Djem is a cool place to go on an excursion for half a day..but the rest of the town is like Baghdad.

I'm liking the blend of strictly religious Muslims wearing full burqas and local girls walking about happily in jeans or shorts, about a 50/50 split.

Went to Hammamet last summer with the wife and kids. Had a lovely time. This was mostly due however to being on an all inclusive resort with private beach patrolled by cops on horseback looking for local pushy beach traders. Weather was great and there was no need to leave the resort as everything was there. Food entertainment and security was good and lots of Brits there. I did go for a stroll a couple of times outside of the complex, not very clean or maintained and as expected was approached several times by traders. The coach trip in from what was a new and excellent airport was something else. It was literally like driving through a sparse biblical nomadic landscape with shanty towns deserted villages goat herders and kids selling fruit and fish on the roadside.

I went the year before last to have a break after going on holiday. We just stayed in the hotel and did bugger all for the week, the hotel was fine with good food, but i don't think it would be safe to go out of the hotel at night.

Went to Hammamet, last September, stayed at Sentido Le Sultan. Say's it's 4*, a gross understatement probably 5+. Went on excursions to Carthage, Tunis and Sidi Boe Sahaid(excuse spelling, El Djem and Nabeul. Where one of the stallholders was wearing a Cardiff City Shirt. Be prepared for some hassle but 'la la sukran' (apologies) usually works. There are places that look like no-go areas but are not. It's a very poor economy with little or no infrastructure with regard to road cleaners'and the like. People are so friendly it's unbelievable. Be prepared to tip as the waiters et al are poorly paid, but a tip of 10 Tunisian dinar means you will be treated like a Lord. My wife and I were so impressed that we have booked a fortnight in September and will be going back to Nabeul market looking for the stallholder again.

Perfect place for people who like a holiday that revolves around laying by the hotel pool.

ISIS are shooting Cheristians in the country next to Tunisia so it could be risky.
Went to Tunisia a couple of years ago and got into a scuffle with stall holders outside El Djem amphitheatre and with a bloke who tried to sell me a fake £20 note in a mosque. They all seem to intent on robbing westerners, gits. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/getmycoat.gif

ISIS are shooting Cheristians in the country next to Tunisia so it could be risky. Tunisia has the highest numbers of IS terrorists in Syria and Iraq at present. Hopefully they're about to get the boot and could be returning home. With a bit of luck they wont be allowed to live and fight another day but I still think I'd give Tunisia a miss for a few years.

I went there years ago so this post is utterly pointless, but we stayed in a nice little hotel in Jasmine Hammamet. I'd never had a lie-by-the-pool holiday before but I'd been working 16 hour days and I was shattered, so it was great. The amphitheatre is incredible - well worth the visit and more impressive than the Colosseum. The hotel was brilliant - staff very relaxed and good. As soon as you leave the hotel it changes though. There is nothing romantic or authentic about walking around the markets: it's conmen pedalling shit to tourists, same as most places like this.

I would give it a miss for the time being, there are lots of safer places where you can sit by a pool.

Don't do it, worst holiday I have ever had in my life. Terrible food, crap hotel and nightmare locals who would have happily nicked my misses never to be seen again. I'd rather spend a week homeless in Swansea with my CCFC top on.... http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/thumbup.gif

Its now a dangerous place with the number of IS fighters its given birth to.

They reckon don't handle the money, full of bacteria.Stay in an All inclusive Hotel, wash your hands regulary, wear incontinence pants, take plenty of bog roll, don't fart, wear a stab vest to the market,oh and enjoy your well earned break. There is only one sun in the sky,it's the same one for everyone, why anyone would go there is beyond belief.

I've seen some last minute deals and fancy a recharge. Checked the travel advice and some obvious no go areas near borders but the coast looks pretty safe.By far the shiiiitest place I have ever been, I wouldn't go back if it was all free. As for Tunis, a group of about 20 half molested my then misses and would have gladly dragged her off. I don't mind a bit of hassle, travelled around India and Mexico budget style but the grief I got in Tunisia the second you left the hotel complex was beyond.....

Today's attack was in a museum in the capital Tunis. A tourist destination if there ever was one. Anyone who goes to an Islamic country in this day and age should weigh up the risks very carefully indeed.
