View Full Version : Wigan - what would you have preferred

Back in 2013 when Wigan won the FA cup, commentator Clive Tyldesley summised that winning the trophy was more important than Premier league survival as they'd surely be back soon.

I disagreed at the time, simply due to the low success rate of teams going down and managing to go straight back up. It was a question not too dissimilar to ours in 2008 when we debated whether we would rather promotion or win the FA cup. From what I remember there was a slight preference for promotion.

2 years on for Wigan, if you asked their fans would they have preferred to have stayed up in 2013 instead of winning the cup, would it be safe to assume the majority would now have happily given up the cup?

FA cup all day long for me, even the league cup I'm pretty sure we would all swap our one season of premier league football for the FA cup win over Portsmouth in 2008

Cup win. I don't want to just survive, I want to win things. The Premier League is a closed shop and will be for the next decade or so - I'd rather win a competition than prove that I could survive as a small fish in a boring division.

FA cup for me. Losing to pompey still haunts me, being a shit championship club doesn't The high of winning the FA Cup (or even winning the pelanties against Liverpool) would be a far bigger feeling than the low of getting relegated. Relegation really wasn't that bad - maybe as it was pretty much guaranteed in February.

Wigan relegated but won the cup, Wigan make the play-offs, Wigan relegated with lots of stories about off the pitch affairs. So our promotion season was a disaster of a season??

The Villa fans I work with are crapping it. There is no choice for them, they'll forfeit the cup to retain their Premier league place.

Ironically a guy that I work with who is a Watford fan, is not renewing because they have been promoted as he doesn't like the Premiership and it falsehoods.

There is no choice for them, they'll forfeit the cup to retain their Premier league place. There's probably a dozen clubs max for whom staying in the top division is more important than winning a cup. I'd say Villa are on one side of that and someone like Newcastle is just on the other. Having been relegated recently and seeing it wasn't so bad, I reckon lots of their fans would take finally winning a trophy.

anyone who says they would rather win the cup is selfish.
hypocrites mun, the money in the premier league is bonkers,
and it is the survival of the club that should come first.

For the fans it has to be a cup win, for the owners and board members who are just passing through it would be the riches of the premier league.

FA Cup win every time. People remember Cup winners but not Premier League winners. Even winning the League Cup would have been more important to me than that season we had in the Premier which was a barrel load of shit.

I guess it's probably different for Villa. Their fans will remember winning cups (even though it's only the league cup in the 90s if they're under 40) and their long record in the top division is better than anyone other than Everton. Villa were around before those whippersnappers from the Woolwich arsenal came along

Cup win all day long, said so at the time of each final and nothing has changed. It was nice to do it, i.e. finally make the premier league but it will always be a cup, particularly the way we lost both finals. I feel Portsmouth were there for the taking but we weren't brave enough and the Liverpool final we just simply should have won, not for the balance of play but Liverpool were poor, we played above ourselves and that Miller chance and the two liverpool missed penalties in the shootout and not taking advantage leave a strong sense of missing something.
