View Full Version : Hen Wlad Fyn Hadau v God Save The Queen

If you do t know where our anthem came from.....

The writer Evan James was contacted by his cousin who had moved to America and wanted him to join him there, telling him how amazing America was.
Evan, in a series of letters, wrote poetry depicting what Wales meant to him and how he could not leave. The language, the music, the heart of Wales was too precious too him.

God Save the Queen ( or King ) is not about a country at all, it's about serving a family ( in this case German ) and wishing them wealth and good fortune, vowing to fight for that family.

It's little wonder there is not much passion when it is sung.

The much loved verse 6:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

It will be God Save The King in the not too distant future, of course. The tune was popular during the American Civil War. Ignoring the lyrics for as moment, I think that Mae Hen Wlad... is much more stirring. It rises, emotionally as the song progresses. God Save is flatter, weaker, and the ending peters out. But then I am biased, I suppose.

The French is the best by a country mile.
The Italians have a corker as well.
Subjective, obviously, but you would have a job persuading me to to go against those two.

Dislike the American or Canadian anthems, quite like the Scottish. The majority of anthems are better when not sung in English, most are just "flag", "pride", "war", "forever" in one order or another.

I thought GSTQ was supposed to be the British anthem with Land of Hope and Glory being the English one, neither of which are that uplifting.

Hen Wlad for me closely followed by the Itailian Anthem.

Hen Wlad for me closely followed by the Itailian Anthem. GSTQ is the British anthem and England don't have an official one is my understanding. The blurring of the lines between British and English is a problem (imo) that extends beyond the anthems.

the french and germans have both got great national anthems, but history says it made no difference whatsoever, when it came to past wars

they both got battered by the british and russians respectively, an anthem should reflect the peoples perception about how they feel about their country.

unfortunately the british anthem is way out of date and touch, it stems back to colonial days, and does not reflect how many people feel today. many people in this country would get rid of the monarchy tomorrow, because they are simply out of touch, and do not represent the vast majority of the british public.

jerusalem, land of hope and glory, nimrod, even vangelis chariots of fire, would be far better choices.

britain is no longer a world super power, and the anthem of god saves the queen makes a mockery of the british nation. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/thumbup.gif
