View Full Version : Calling all the holiday/travel folk!

After looking at every possible country in the world, we went into Kuoni to sort a honeymoon. Fair play to them, best service ive ever had from a holiday company, not just where do you want to go and what hotel (the stuff you can do yourself)

Anyways, after telling them exactly what we want from a holiday/honeymoon, she drew up a plan to go to Bangkok for 3 nights, then onto thailand for 10, then over to dubai for 3 then home. All the hotels look amazing, things to do are amazing, and sums us up in one. BUT - I know nothing about Bangkok (apart from the women may have a surprise) so can any offer advice on these 3 destinations, worth going to etc. Costs out in Bangkok and Thailand. I know Dubai will be expensive.

The alternative was to do Sri Lanka and the Maldives, so if any has been to all 5 places and can recommend one over the other Id be very grateful.

We went on honeymoon to Kenya - safari for just over a week followed by a hotel for a week.

Would have driven each other crazy sitting by a hotel pool for any longer and needed to make it a memorable experience aswell. Hot air balloons over the Masai, game drives at 5 in the morning, being scared sh1tless when confronted by a herd of elephants - tas fantastic. It was good to have the second week at the hotel but we were bored by the end of it and wanted to get home.

Bangkok is a great city and certainly worth 3 nights. But where in Thailand are you off to then? Phuket is a package holiday shithole, it's like an Asian Costa del Sol. Beaches are overcrowded and filthy. Not honeymoon material.

Maybe worth asking what time of year you are going? I know Dubai gets good weather pretty much all year around, what about the other suggestions?

Only asking as I myself am making the foolish mistake of wedding a snake with tits this summer, so am looking for honeymoon destinations over the Christmas period!

26-06-15, 09:41
MArch for me, So weather is pretty good from what ive seen. It was either Thailand side or Caribbean for weather. Ideally I wanted Hawaii, but they seem to get rain in March. Then I wanted to do Sarari, but again time of year isnt the best.

Ummm http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/getmycoat.gif Probably you're not going to get to these places with a package holiday, you might want to consider organising it yourself. It'll be cheaper and give you more freedom. Traveling around Thailand is a piece of piss.

Ummm http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/getmycoat.gif The Qatar flights are almost enough to get BA silver status too. Depending on who you fly with, that may or may not be worth something to you. The Avios you earn for the Qatar flights are significant, too.

Wherever you go, look into the which islands you can visit on a day cruise. I stayed a few nights near Phuket (went to the town one afternoon, that was enough) and had two days out on boat trips. Absolutely amazing on the water.

Bangkok is bonkers, absolutely bonkers. We were only there for 1 night and I loved it, but my wife hated it, mainly because it was so hot and stuffy. Its still around 30c at midnight http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/yikes.gif
Hua Hin is a really nice place. We were there for new year last year and we had a cracking time.
If you opt for Pattaya I would recommend staying south of Pattaya. We stayed in a small place called Banamphur (about 10 miles south of Pattaya) and it was lovely. Its pretty much central for the theme parks.
Wherever you go mate I'm sure you'll love it. We loved it that much that we're going back again at the end of the year for a month http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/malky.gif

Really looking forward to Bangkok, staying in the Banyan Tree Hotel. Nice pool on the 21st floor outside, so will be in there for 3 days as you say its 30c ha!
Then onto Cape Panwa in the Regent Cape Panwa hotel. Seems to be a secluded part of Phuket but still with things to do, so will do us well. Then Dubai in the Towers Rowtana, cant wait to go to the Atlantis water park. ha.

One package was £10,900 and that was 10 nights

Trailfinders put bespoke packages together and will always look at best flight prices. Kuoni prices are too upmarket for me as they often come with extras I don't need and want.

In case you are still looking: you can still go to Bangkok via Doha (and possibly Dubai) with Qatar for under £1k, in business class, from Amsterdam. Amsterdam is easy and cheap to get to, and Qatar business class is fantastic and well worth the extra £100 or so.

I'm off to Thailand in a week. We've only got 8 nights (2 of which are in Bangkok) so not trying to do anything too ambitious. As far as I can tell, the general rule is that the harder you have to go to an island, the less spoilt it will be. We are staying on Koh Samui which I believe is very built up, but we are going for one of the more luxurious hotels so hoping it will be peaceful. We've only got 6 nights there and we are going there mainly because it's easy to get to and it is not Phuket - if we had two weeks, we would definitely go to different, quieter islands. Someone posted the top 50 or something airlines to fly with. I always assumed Virgin and BA were the best. (only even flown package holiday so Thomson etc, and Air Transat) Anyways I was shocked to see they were so far down the pecking order, and the likes of Qatar, Emirates etc were mostly above.

The accomodation is very cheap, by the way. Bangkok too. Places like the Conrad are sub-£100 a night, which is pretty amazing. Independent non-chain hotels which can be at least as good are significantly cheaper. Qatar were amazing when I flew to India with them. I dunno how many bottles of wine me and my mate drank but they were rolling around the aisles.

Peajay: yes, exactly that. Check the email end of last week. If you are happy to start your journey in Amsterdam rather than London, BKK is under EUR1300 return, via Doha. I paid less, but that's still a great fare. I think it ends at the end of this week. (BTW, you can earn Avios for Qatar flights too - that flight would get you about 15,000 avios and 560 tier points, which is almost enough for Silver status with BA. I'd value the points and the status at about £200)

What is perhaps most bizarre is that it this principle still applies if you are flying with BA. For example: you can currently book return flights from Frankfurt to HK with BA, in Business (Club World) for under £1k. That is a great fare, even if BA Business is not a patch on airlines like Qatar. The route is Frankfurt ---> London ---> HK. You can also stop over in places like Bangkok on the way if you like. The crazy thing is you can book that for under £1k. When you get on the plane, you could be sat next to someone who just booked the London ---> HK leg. He will have paid over £2k. You will be doing more flying for half as much money. Sounds crazy, but it's true. The logic is that if you live in Frankfurt and you want to fly to HK, you can fly direct with lots of airlines. BA have to fly via London, so the only way they can compete is by heavily discounting the price. Conversely if you live in the UK, BA can fly you to HK direct so there is no need to discount.

Either way, if you are happy to start your long-haul journeys in a major European airport rather than the UK, you can often get business class fares that are comparable to economy flights from the UK. It takes a bit of effort, but it's worth it.

On the BA vs other airlines thing: BA are a long way behind. I don't want to sound like a [name redacted] wannabe, but for the last few years I've been lucky enough to fly at the front of the plane so I cannot really comment on the economy cabins, but Qatar business class is better than BA first. BA business is more like premium economy with a lie-flat bed. It is still very cool and the bed is welcome, but compare it just does not compare to the Middle Eastern airlines. Some of them have suites rather than seats, for god's sake!
