Some people say he has scored goals against a lot of low quality teams compared to Bobby Charlton.

Does this thread count as clickbait? Nobody thinks he's the greatest ever British player.

I don't really like giving Rooney credit but getting to 50 goals before he's 30 is pretty impressive. There are same vaguely interesting stats that show that Charlton's record of goals in friendlies and goals in thrashings is slightly higher than Rooney's. Ten of Charlton's goals came in wins of 8-0, 8-1, 9-0 and 10-0.

greaves had the best goal to game ratio
Francis Jeffers must have the best goal to game ratio in international football. But Greaves' record is amazing really. As far as England is concerned that honour must go to George Camsell of Middlesborough who only won 9 caps for England between 1929 and 1936 but managed to score 18 international goals. He had the misfortune of living in the shadow of Dixie Dean so his chances were limited. In 1926/27 season he scored 59 league goals smashing the previous record of 43, the following season Dixie Deans broke his record by scoring 60.

Possibly the best player to have ever laced up a pair of boots in the history of the game.
After all he has scored that number of international goals whilst playing for a team who are hapless, hopeless and technically deficient according to the combined footballing wisdom of this board.
That is some achievement .
In all seriousness though he is , at best top 20. The best , as agreed by the likes of Charles, Charlton, Law, Shankly & Busby was Duncan Edwards. Obviously. His life was tragically cut short but those who saw him still talk about the lad as if he was from a different planet.

Own Goals is very close behind. The San Marino defender put Own Goals level with Rooney and Charlton in the previous game. That is an insult to the likes of John Charles, George Best, Stanley Matthews, Ian Rush, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Moore, Billy Wright, Gordon Banks etc, etc........one could list 100 better players than Rooney.

lardy
09-09-15, 10:46
Rooney and Charlton's goals in a more legible format. As stated above, Charlton got 10 of his goals in massive thrashings (8-0 to 10-0) against the then equivalents of San Marino. They both played in 11 games where England won by at least 4 goals (19 of Charlton's and 16 of Rooney's goals came in these games).

Are we talking about the best ever goal scorer or player?

If it is the latter then most experts say John Charles particularly as he was equally good upfront and in defence.

Rooney gets a bit of a bad press really, but he's a great player. If you were to look for a montage of his goals on You Tube I'm sure there would be some amazing ones that not many other players could achieve. Scoring 50 for an England side that hasn't really been the best is some achievement, the record stood for a long time and a better goalscorer in Shearer never even came close to breaking it.

He must be doing something right.

bale better than puskas, di stefano, raul, ronaldo and countless others http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif give your a head a shake sunshine he aint in the same bracket. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif
You don't have to be better than them to be a legend dickhead. You'll class Yeboah, Deane and Kewell as legends but they aren't to lace my boots let alone Bales. i think you live in a dreamworld, http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif and you obviously have a vast array of football knowledge that could could be written on the back of 2 postage stamps. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif

In true top trumps style though, I'll take you on in Europe. Like not knowing the Czech Republic didn't exist in the seventies. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/tong.gif

I think he's an excellent player but short of Greatest British Player Ever, he's just one of those guys many like to hate because of his success, it's a British thing.
He does get paid a huge amount of money and that will be a factor but then so does every top league football player and not everyone is hated.
Bale has been successful (perhaps even more so than rooney on a personal level), and earns far more than he does. He's not hated anywhere near as much as rooney
I wonder who'll move 1st, Rooney or Bale ?Forgive me if I've taken what you're saying in the wrong way but if it's about loyalty then both left the team that nurtured them as soon as their agent showed them a load of pound signs
