Last night's woeful performance and the current state of affairs down Sloper Road is nothing compared to relatively recent times in our history....Anybody who remembers Pat Heard, Jeff Chandler, Robin Seamark, Mark Jones, etc, will testify to that. We had Len Ashburst's second spell, Kenny Hibbitt, Phil Neal, etc, in the dugout, whilst we were presided over by Tony Clemo, Samesh Kumar, not to mention the ill-fated Cadman consortium, who had less money than I did....But those of us who went week-in week-out never questioned ourselves for carrying on going; an absence, even for the odd game, was out of the question. We read the Football Echo religiously, we phoned the 0898 clubline to hear the latest news from Phil Suarez (which my prompted my father to have a talk with me, thinking it was a porn line when he read our itemised phone bill I had to get him to phone it himself to put his mind at rest)....We were hardly a "together" club in those days anyone remember the Gillingham game on a Friday (I think) night, which was very nearly our last ever game? Less than 3,000 saw us win 2-0. And the gates were to be locked the following day. Also the gate receipts from the QPR cup game weren't they found on Caerphilly Mountain some time afterwards? The Tony Clemo years were an absolute joke....So no, as bad as the current state of affairs is, we've been though worse in our history....So why the hell do many of those of us who remember those times no longer care? We did then passionately & fanatically and we can't use some of the excuses that have been trotted out. We were a division 3 & 4 yo-yo team, our various chairmen treated us with contempt (Rick Wright famously said that if Nathan Blake had kept Sheffield United up the extra £200k we would've earned from that transfer clause would've paid for him to go on holiday). And we had the likes of Paul Shaw and Kurt Nogan up front. Sam revitalised us, but at a massive, massive cost....I wouldn't have dreamed of giving up then, like I didn't in the Ridsdale years, when we had the Inland Revenue taking us to court every few months, it seemed. It's not a Premier League thing I don't like the league, never have; the attitudes of the players repulses me. I've always felt happiest at this level. Oh sure, it was great to experience what it was like to dine at the tope table for once, just as it was to go to 2 Wembley showpiece finals (playing turgid football under Malky for the second one), but I most certainly don't miss it, or the household names who came to town every other week (not because lost, but because, well, just because)....I can't currently do weekend games atall and probably won't for a couple of years, so I am limited to midweeks. I am yet to go this season (despite there being a couple of opportunities so far) and haven't been since March. I am not exactly busting a gut to go to the next midweek fixture either, to be honest. If anything, the current state of the club had made my enforced absence rather easy to bear. But if I had the opportunity to keep going, I honestly don't know if I would any longer, and that really saddens me....So perhaps this IS as bad as it's ever been; for me anyway.

Only read the first few sentences as no paragraphs but it didnt cost an arm and a leg to go back then.Plus we had the off field activites to keep us entertained. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif Personally, through all those shit times, ive never felt so disinterested than I currently do.

Yup I'd have Slade over Osman, Neal, the May/Yorath "Dream Team", etc, any day of the week, but I WANTED to watch their shit sides. I don't give a toss at the moment.
