He'll spend the whole sentence out on probation...it'll be interesting to see what restrictions are in place re: European travel, night matches etc...

Under the Spanish system, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation

I wonder how many you could employ for a year on minimum wage with the amount he's shielded from tax? I wonder if it's all the unemployed in the Basque country.

Spanish minimum wage is about €9171 per year. With the €5 m messi owed you could pay 545 unemployed people of the Basque country.
The population of the Basque country is 2.189m of which 1.272m are of working age.
14% of those are considered unemployed meaning about 178k people.
Meaning that messis unpaid tax could have paid for all of the unemployed in the Basque country for just over a day.

Comparing Catalonia would make a bit more sense.

What has Cerys Matthews got to do with it?

Comparing Catalonia would make a bit more sense.

The unemployment rate of Catalonia is about 17% of a working population of over 3.5m (out of 7.5m total)
So about 650k unemployed.
So messis taxes would pay the unemployment benefits for all of these for around a third of a day.

He wont have ANY restrictions on him, whatsoever! All first offenders in Spain receiving less than 24 months imprisonment have their sentences suspended. He is goi nowhere. Lucky boy!
