No, this isn't a post to confirm he has signed. I just found some crap clarinet jokes online...

How do you get a clarinetist out of a tree?
Cut the noose.

What’s the difference between a clarinet solo and scraping your nails down the chalkboard?
Vibrato.

What do you call 20 clarinetists at the bottom of the ocean?
A good start.

What do clarinetists use for birth control?
Their personalities.

Cardiff to sign Wales defender Jazz Richards as Scott Malone set to join Fulham...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36780146

Wales defender Jazz Richards is on the verge of joining Cardiff City from Fulham with Bluebirds left-back Scott Malone set to move the other way.

Richards was part of Wales' squad at Euro 2016, making one substitute appearance, with new Cardiff boss Paul Trollope on the national coaching team.

The 25-year-old Richards joined Fulham in January 2015, having played more than 50 games for Swansea City.

"We're hoping that'll be completed in the very near future," said Trollope.

"And we think he'll be a great addition to the squad,."

Trollope has already added striker Kenneth Zohore and fellow forward Frederic Gounongbe from Belgian side KVC Westerlo and the club completed the signing of Lex Immers in May.

With Wales manager Chris Coleman explaining Trollope is unlikely to continue coaching the national side, the Bluebirds have been linked with another Wales squad member, Birmingham winger David Cotterill.

Former Wales and Cardiff defender Danny Gabbidon thinks a move to the Bluebirds would suit Richards.

"I think it could be a good move all round. If anything at the minute, Jazz is probably playing better for his country than his club," he told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"Obviously he's worked with Paul Trollope in the Welsh set-up, that would help him. I think he needs to play week, in week out."

Malone scored one goal in 56 appearances for Cardiff since joining from Millwall in January 2015.

The 25-year-old was not in the Bluebirds' squad for their 4-0 pre-season friendly win at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Cardiff impressed in their new 5-3-2 formation, which Wales used to excellent effect in their historic run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

Richards featured prominently in that system during Wales' qualification campaign, and new Bluebirds head coach Trollope hopes his arrival will be one of many at Cardiff City Stadium.

"I think there's a few to come," added Trollope. "We are actively looking to strengthen. I think the group is a good group, there's a good core here."

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm not the biggest fan of Richards, but if we are going to use 3-5-2 as our main system then I guess it does make sense.
We have options at left wing back, John and Fabio, whereas I'm not sure Malone has ever really played that role.
Peltier is more of a traditional right back, which only leaves Fabio on the right wingback role- possibly jazz is being brought in for cover.

There's another young Welshman playing a similar role Elliot Hewitt. He was really highly rated early in his career and was picked up by Ipswich, where he seems to have stalled somewhat. Think he's in league 2 again now, but he's still young.

Blue in the Face

Background Jazz?

Is Jazz intended as backup for Fabio on the right? Another negotiation stumbling block perhaps.

I can see why there is criticism of Richards. His positional sense has been questionable in the past. But is that a bi-product of never really cementing a starting place at any club?

Rjk
18-07-16, 09:45
If we were looking for another left wingback then I'd want us to look at Rico Henry. That kid is lightning and can beat his man regularly.
They might be looking for big money for him though

Think Hewitt has major problems with injuries. He had quite a serious hip operation. He's dropped way down the leagues now (Notts County?) Hopefully he can still live up to his potential.

The Welsh young gun I would look at would be Gethin Jones

Rico Henry plays left back for Walsall, and was in the league one team of the year at age 19.
Looks quite small for a defender, so it has been speculated that he might convert to a winger eventually.
Probably some similarities with our own Declan John, only I think Henry is probably quicker and better at dribbling.

He is on the radar of a number of premier league teams though so might already be out of our budget.

Think Jazz would be a good signing personally. Not seen enough of him to make a complete judgement on him but when he played for Wales in qualifying the odd couple of times I thought he looked good enough to really challenge Gunter for the right wing back position. The Belgium game in particular he impressed, against Hazard. Malone was pretty poor for most of last season.

Most importantly Trollope will know better than most how good Jazz is so if he wants to sign him I'd trust his judgement for the time being. It also looks like he wants to set Cardiff up using the 5-3-2 so well implemented by Wales and Jazz would presumably fit very well into that set up, as would Fabio and Declan John potentially.

A player like Gunter in that kind of role will be a real asset in games against a superior opposition where their primary objective will be to defend. But let's not forget the same team has also struggled to break down some pretty poor sides and i think the wingbacks are a big part of that deficiency.

In a league like the championship i think we need wingbacks tyat can offer something going forward as well.

Blue in the Face

I see your point RJK. This is why I think Fabio can potentially shine in this new system for Cardiff. He will have license to attack with the insurance policy of the extra defender behind him who can drop into the channel/flank if he were to lose possession.

He also got taken to the cleaners by Lloyd Isgrove in the Play Offs.

Henry may turn out to be a good player, but I'd prefer us to show some faith in the young talent we have than spend what I'm pretty sure would be £1 million plus on someone who is unproven at this level. Anyway, left back/wing back is a position we have plenty of coverage at the moment with Fabio, Connolly and Peltier can also play there, as can Jazz Richards if he signs, and that's before we get to John and Tutonda - the highly rated Rhys Abbruzzese has recently signed his first pro contract as well

In order to make a 3-5-2 work the fullbacks have to really put a shift in. That combined with the intensity of a championship season means that we are going to have to use several players in those roles over the course of the season, possibly with player rotation from the start.
I would have 2 specialist wing backs in the squad for each flank, plus any youngsters we want to bring through.
Connelly and Peltier don't strike me as wingbacks

Connolly and Peltier will both be needed to contest the 3 centre half roles.
In fact with Morrison injured there's a good chance both will start as centre halfs at Birmingham

Playing three centre backs means height is less of an essential pre-requisite, so long as the other centre backs can compensate in the air. Peltier would easier fit into playing as one of three centre backs than he would a centre back in a back four. This system could also aid Tom James, if he turns out to have the quality for Championship football. Agree with RJK that neither Connelly or Peltier would make great wingbacks though.

I also wonder if Tutonda might be ready to challenge Declan for a first team break through

Jazz Richards' move to Cardiff City can boost the Wales defender's career, says national team assistant Osian Roberts.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/36847031

"Hopefully this move will be a good one for Jazz so he can step up in his career," Roberts said.

"What Jazz needs now is a regular run of games and to play week in, week out," Roberts told BBC Wales Sport.

"When he went to Fulham he played, had an injury and struggled to get back into the side.

"For whatever reason, he needs a change of environment.

"Paul knows him very well having been in the Wales set-up, has seen a what's he's like not only on the pitch, but also what he's like on a daily basis on the training ground.

"He's a good trainer and has got a great attitude."

..........

Coventry City's former Wales full-back Sam Ricketts says Richards' move to Cardiff and regular football will be boost his chances of a regular Wales spot.

"Maybe he will be able to push Chris Gunter for a place in the Wales team," ex-Wales full-back Ricketts said.

"At the moment that is still firmly Chris Gunter's position.

"If Jazz can get some playing time and show what a good player he is, then he's got every chance of playing for Wales in the future.

"Jazz is a good player who has never really had a prolonged run of games.

"If he gets that at Cardiff it gives him an opportunity to improve and show what a good player he is."
