Despite playing for the despicable Leeds United team under Don Revie, Sprake was a top class goalie in his day.

Remember him playing in goals several times when I first watched Wales play at Ninian Park in the late 60s, early 70's

Surprised to read he only won 37 International Caps. I would have thought it would have been 50+

Here is a great clip of him punching Bobby Gould. Can't say I blame him:hehe:

Just a booking :hehe: Those were the days.

Gould did give him a sneaky back-kick there beforehand.

That's sad to hear. A name from my childhood and at 71 no great age.

Didn't realise that for decades Sprake was an outcast at Leeds for spilling the beans on Revie back in 1977. Instead of burying their heads in the sand perhaps Leeds Utd should have bothered to listen to what he had to say. Shoddy shoddy treatment.

Yes I read his autobiography and was amazed at that story; I don't remember it at all. It does confirm the Leeds United stereotype behaviour of that time.

Very sad all round.

Apparently Leeds will conduct a minutes applause in memory of Sprake on Saturday. It would have been better to show their appreciation of him when he was still alive.

He was a seriously underrated keeper mainly due to his ability to have those nightmare moments ,that every goalie has ,in big televised matches. A 70's version of Joe Hart.
Really surprised at his welsh caps tally as he appeared to have been the Wales no 1 throughout my childhood.
RIP.

R I P Gary

I can remember some of his mistakes usually all followed by Jackie Charlton glareing down on him

And I too thought he had far more caps than he did, her certainly deserved them
