The 'bow' that we normally see is a portion of a circle, with the light source (usually the Sun), your viewpoint, and the centre of the circle in a straight line - the sun behind you, the centre point in front.

If you happen to see a rainbow from a high altitude, eg an aircraft, it could be circular.

What you saw wasn't a rainbow.

It was a circumzenithal arc, so there!
