I don't get the outrage, it's not as though "the powers that be" have forced F1 into this, they've just made a decision that works for them.

The grid girls are there to attract people to the sport, and make it seem glamorous. the world has changed though, and these days it doesn't have the same effect, to some it seems tacky and it probably puts off as many people as it brings in.

So why should F1 continue paying their wages when they are no longer effective?

Should we force F1 to keep them employed to satisfy the sensitive souls who are struggling to deal with the modern world?

They are their bits they can do what they like with them, the feminists don't like that though, F1 say it's their own decision but I bet you they have been bombarding them with complaints like they do with everyone else who does not go along with their weird views.

So, you reckon that the hugely powerful F1 franchise has succumbed to complaints from feminists ( probably not a priority in target audience)

If a younger lady wishes to take part in such a job then that’s her decision and it seems that people can find fault in anything these days or have some faux outrage.

What I agree with is though is that that the bosses of formula one that multi million if not billion industry probably didn’t go all Germaine Greer, start playing ‘Sisters are doing it for themsleves’ And think yeah they’ve got a point, right on Sisters.

I think they’ve their own reasons probably along the lines of tackiness as stated above as opposed to what a few people write on Twitter.

Dirty old men leering at beautiful young women. Nice!

Women are being positioned as an embellishment to a sport. Nice!

The following statement sums the situation up perfectly.

“Sport mirrors and magnifies society. If we depict women in sport in a way that reinforces a narrow stereotype, we add to the pressure young girls in particular feel to look and act a certain way. If we depict women in a central, powerful and sporting role, we create a positive, modern and accurate image to inspire others.”

Rubbish. None of these girls who have lost their job said they feel pressured in anyway, they are absolutely gutted to lose large parts of their modelling income.

Where did I say in my post that the girls were being pressured??

Why in today’s day and age in sport do we have to have women wearing next to nothing draped over cars etc.

As a woman who absolutely loves sport, it doesn’t sit comfortable with me.

However I am NOT some kind of looney feminist I just feel that it’s not necessary.

We'd better start putting t-shirts on those male models then in the boxer adverts.

May as well throw a vest on AJ when he boxes too judging by the drooling women over my Instagram (the kind that if it was a bloke to a woman would be reported)

Anyone think of any more?

In fact they ought to have a man stood there fully dressed holding a pair of boxer shorts, after all the majority of men the advert is aimed at don't want to see a man half naked do they..another advert indirectly on t.v. f9rbthe pleasure of oggling women.

Yes, of course its nothing to do with those making the most noise about it, all just to do with the F1 bosses alll of a sudden deciding to pinch the smallest of pennies in a multi-billion pound industry. I know how we can save a few hundred quid. Lets stop employing the models. LOL.

They made the decision on the back of the outrage caused by the darts girls, and decided its not worth the bad press from the vocal minority.

How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Twelve:

One to screw it in.

One to excoriate men for creating the need for illumination.

One to blame men for inventing such a faulty means of illumination.

One to suggest the whole "screwing" bit to be too "rape-like".

One to deconstruct the lightbulb itself as being phallic.

One to blame men for not changing the bulb.

One to blame men for trying to change the bulb instead of letting a woman do it.

One to blame men for creating a society that discourages women from changing light bulbs.

One to blame men for creating a society where women change too many light bulbs.

One to advocate that light bulb changers should have wage parity with electricians.

One to alert the media that women are now "out-lightbulbing" men.

One to just sit there taking pictures for her blog for photo-evidence that men are unnecessary.

What does that even mean in this context?

Well, it means that you are a keyboard warrior. Looking at your Post, anyone would assume it means you are comfortable saying these things with a keyboard, and wouldn't be as likely to repeat them in different circumstances.

Hope this helps.

If women want to choose a career that is created by men to titillate other men and unavailable to most women we should let them have that choice.

Correct, but also if F1 decide they don't want to waste money paying models to hold umbrellas, because they aren't bringing in the crowds any more, then we should respect that choice

Gallery denies censorship after removing Victorian painting

A gallery has temporarily removed a Victorian painting of naked adolescent girls in a move to "encourage debate" about how such images should be displayed in the modern age.

Sorry, Rjk, I was trying to be a clever-arse by suggesting that it isn't much of a career choice for women if 1. It's based on the basic desires of others, and 2. It's determined by how she looks and how old she is.

Not that I'm saying it should happen (some men ARE ****ing nuisance pest types) but it's got to the point where in a busy pub you won't even point out a decent looking girl anymore for fear of a blackcurrant vodka down ya white top...

Football isn't much of a career for men given it's determined by physical acts and how old the players are...

Basic desires? Vast majority of F1 viewers are petrol heads. Think you'll find most creaming themselves over the excellent technical features Sky have rather than a fleeting glimpse of a young woman for all of a second.

Are footballers chosen by how good they look?

And if F1 viewers aren't interested in the women then why have them?

If you can point out any footballers who don't match the fotballer prototype these days... those overweight tend to be loaned out in the hope other clubs can get them fit.

They are there, afaik not employed directly by F1 but by local promoters to bring a bit of glamour.

The cars and drivers are the stars, the grid girls are just something that's there. No viewer tunes in to watch the grid girls ( except sludge ), no viewer tunes in to watch the ring girls in boxing or ufc ( except Sludge ) etc.

What we're seeing these days is a culture espoused that women can truly do anything they want to - except things a vocal minority don't want them to do. Which seems to me to be as anti-feminist as you can get.

You ask me to name a player who doesn't meet the footballer prototype then you name one. But it's a poor analogy anyway - a footballer's skill is nurtured over many years and not just a genetic gift and a hour in hair and make-up.

Then you suggest they're there to bring a bit of glamour but no-one's taking any notice. Then why have them if no-one is bothered about the glamour?

I don't think what is being espoused has changed. Feminism wants women to be judged equally and fairly like anyone else and not just as eye candy and 'glamour'.

That's bs though. Feminists can claim that all they like but women themselves are highly judgmental on looks et al - probably moreso than men. Feminists would rail against NFL cheerleaders, I'm sure. Ok, they are highly trained, demonstrating skill in their routines and indeed virtually all are educated to degree level but damn, they aren't wearing suits.

Would you say NFL cheerleaders are just "a genetic gift and an hour in hair and make-up"? That's quite judgemental if you agree with that view.

End of the day, if a model ( part time or other ) wants to hold a sign at a grand prix event ( and they aren't hardly just stood there wearing bikinis ) then imo they are prefectly free to do so without being judged by anyone, especially "feminists".

PS,

I didn't say nobody was taking notice. What I said was that the overwhelming majority of F1 viewers are petrolheads. Do they add a bit of glamour to a sport that is testosterone on speed? Yes. Do people tune in specifically to watch them ( apart from Sludge )? Behave...

You've already explained the difference between cheerleaders and someone holding a sign, so no, I wouldn't make that judgment (not that I mentioned cheerleaders).

"End of the day, if a model wants to hold a sign..." Do they though? Or do they think it's just a job because that's all we can offer them? This is the worth we bestow on them which becomes their self worth - 'just stand there, don't think, don't offer any ideas, you're here just to be the sugar on the event, until we think you're not attractive enough anymore.'

And what if someone applies to be a grid girl and they're not qualified i.e. not hot enough? Maybe (some) women are judgmental about each other because this is how society values them. Also, everyone can be quite snooty about each other in particular ways; it doesn't mean they want that in a societal framework.

Glamour is shallow and a facade; I think it's good we're moving away from such a mindset.

That's all we can offer them? Good grief - it's one days work. One day. Models are self-employed after all...

Shallow, facade are terms that can be used at the faux outrage on behalf of such downtrodden women...

My niece had Geordie shore on here after school Monday afternoon, one of them had a "feminist" tshirt on....is she ****.

Another woman who's picture I'd have to find was saying the same about sexualising women..there's a picture of her on an expensive boat lying down showing off her arse in a small bikini.
Half of them don't even know what it means, not doing your fair share of the washing up according to this girl..

It's actually not the women, but the job. I'm not outraged, I'm trying to suggest the job exists because of particular social norms. You've said few people are interested in grid girls but we should keep them anyway because it's an opportunity for particular (i.e. nubile) women. It sounds like you're the one speaking on their behalf.

As a feminist I think women should be allowed to do whatever job they want, i don’t see anything wrong with someone choosing to be a grid girl at all.

Likewise I don’t see a problem with F1 making a decision that they think a certain position isn’t required any more.
