It wouldn't surprise me if the death toll currently stands at tens of thousands. The Chinese government aren't exactly known for telling the truth.

Theres a lot of misinformation flying around at the moment, coming out of China at least - videos purporting to be of people collapsing in China turning out to be from years ago and nothing to do with this.
