View Full Version : Virtual video groups are the way to go....

Every six weeks or so I tend to invite different groups of friends to a modest soirée at my place and we cram into my pretentiously-named beach bar at the bottom of my garden and which only accommodates 8 people. However, it has given me the idea to start a Virtual Beach Bar video group to enable my friends to feel less isolated in these strange times. I just set it up by Skype as it seems to allow more participants than some of the alternatives. Proceedings will start at 9pm on Friday when everyone will be armed with a bottle of wine, a glass and a tongue.

Just an idea to infuse a bit of a social life in what may otherwise be a bleak and solitary existence for many people.

Please don't tell me you are inviting people off here??

Just kidding - great idea. Who on here remembers the Skype crew?

Good idea. How about a virtual City- inspired singalong, too? Anything this online choir can do, we can do better.

Best of luck to anyone who is still in the classroom. The situation regarding who can and who cant go to school is unclear and will be very divisive, socially, when implemented. Plus, teachers are front line when it comes to catching illnesses.

Great idea just a shame this feckin weather we've had for what seems like 6 months doesn't break as the beach bar doesn't evoke the images it should.
Coronavirus might not get you but hypothermia might well.

Careful you don't get that ruffian Gareth Malone knocking on your door, stealing his thunder!

Not sure who Gareth Malone is but I posted this thread to prompt others to make an effort to make their friends and family less isolated. If some people have come up with the same idea that's great.

Gareth Malone is already on the case regarding a virtual choir. I don't think a rousing chorus of "sheepshagging bastards" will make the BBC edit though. Channel 4, maybe! A new virtual football-related sing off series? It has legs.....so to speak. If there are no matches at least we can try and outsing the opposition and keep the vocal chords ready for when matches resume. All we need now is some new CV chants....or is that going too far?

I know your reasons for posting and I've said it's a good idea.

GM (as you obvs couldn't be arsed to Google him ) is a choirmaster who some years back made ordinary people into choristers bringing them together and has been on the tele last few days as he is putting together a "virtual" piece of work to keep spirits up.

Any ideas to try and pick people up in these days of toil are most welcome. Your idea is good and some footage would I'm sure be welcome too

Now for the creative minds on here, of which there are plenty, to provide some meat on those bones

I did suggest to the lads around me (back in the day when football matches happened) "Always sneeze on the English side of the bridge" which raised a titter. Sadly, not so funny now.

On a practical note, the schools here in France are closed over as week now......but each day there are virtual classrooms, with children and teacher interacting via Remote Connection - so lessons continue...and has the benefit I can see how my son interacts and understands French. Wonder if UK schools will do the same?

I think it could well be resurrected after this whole thing blows over (no pun intended).
The Knack's My Sharona was part of a list of songs put forward before it got a bit serious.
Personally I think The Smiths 'Panic' fits the situation pretty well.

I've read that there are quite a few songs currently being written by artists, Bono being one.
There's another which was a song for vietnam war veterans which the writer asked to be taken down as he felt uncomfortable about it being parodied.

Now more than ever is a time to think carefully about what one says and writes.

I have heard that this is one of the things being put forward and pupils being schooled on the logistics this last couple of days.
Sounds an excellent idea.

I suppose that we’re fortunate (couldn’t think of a better word, sorry) that it’s happened in this day & age. We’ve complained about folk staying at home using all the technology, television channels etc that’s available without leaving your home instead of actually getting out and doing things. Ironically it’s the things that a few of us have ridiculed, as in get out and socialise, actually meet people in person has taken a back seat and things like FaceTime are helping in the loneliness issue. Imagine this present scenario 15,20,25 years ago or longer, 3 TV channels and a house phone:yikes:

Virtual Learning Environments don't come free....about £30k a year last time I used one professionally years back. Plus staff and students need training on them. So, schools that haven't got or cant afford a VLE will not have had time to prepare. Also, if teachers stay in school teaching selected pupils, there would not be time to prepare/mark work. More expensive versions now tailor students' learning automatically but rely on pre planned materials from external sources. That said, eventually, apart from the safeguarding/socialising element of education, schools as we know them wont be needed. Just need to move away from linear learning to interactive education. Doable, but needs a huge input of resources tailored to individuals' needs. BBC Click gave it a go in terms of viewers working their own way through an episode, interacting with a limited amount of material, I a way that they chose. The planning and execution showed that it can be done. But that was just one episode. Teachers are expected to plan, execute, mark, review four/five "episodes" a day.
So, TBG, enjoy the virtual beach bar. You've started something now.

Indoor mob....how big was your house? Outdoor mob should be an Olympic sport. Just don't hide under cars when they are about to pull off. Roofs are allowed. No going inside. No cree. Kept us happy for hours as kids and didnt half develop spatial awareness and tactics.

Not a big house at all, but we’d find some cracking places to hide, in fact one of my mates is still missing and this was all taking place in the mid 60s:getscoat:

I'm not sure if any of those terms are exclusive to Cardiff or even to South Wales.

Mob shirley has different rules to hide and seek which is what you seem to be describing? I was late 60's. Mob has a "mobbing place" Ours was a lamppost or corner of a garage. Yes, you had to hide. The object of the exercise then was to get to the mobbing post without being seen. Stealth tactics could be employed...two or three or more would go in one direction and deliberately have poor hiding places enabling one to creep up from behind and reach the mobbing post, shout "One two three mob" and the person who was on, had to stay on if you got there before them. Great game, unless someone went in for their tea and didnt tell anyone! Best hiding places ever....up the lamppost and on top of the garage where the mobbing post was. Hide and seek was just indoors and see if you could find them, as far as I can remember. In a cupboard, behind the sofa or the curtains were our only choices so not that good compared to mob.
