For those of you who are interested here are a few City related quiz questions to have a go at…..

Well done and thanks to everybody who had a go. It was particularly pleasing, as part of setting this quiz, to discover that Bristol City share a nickname with a German Basset Hound ( see Q14) . When we all get back in CCS the next time we play the Wurzels perhaps we should all start barking at them. As the return of football is imminent I will call it a day for the time being in terms of quizzes so that the board can return to normal (?)

An afternoon to forget - it was Paul Parry and sub Eddie Johnson
2. This City player was signed by Dave Jones and had previously played for The Cabbage and a team whose supporters name themselves after athlete Kriss Akabusi - who is he ?
Kenny Miller was signed by Dave Jones in his capacity as Wolves manager - The Cabbage are Hibernian and he also played on loan for Stenhousemuir whose supporters, very strangely, call themselves the Kriss Akabusi Loyal.
3. After playing 70 games for us in the 80s this Welshman went on to pay for 12 teams in the south east of England including the The Brickies, The Nuts and Bolts and The Chats - who is he ?
Karl Elsey played until he was 40. He left us to join Gillingham and didn’t stray very far from that neck of the woods after. Sittingbourne are The Brickies, Ashford Town are The Nuts and Bolts and Chatham Town are The Chats.

Claude Ashton played against us for Corinthian Casuals in the 1927 FA Charity Shield. He was capped only once for England but was captain in his only international appearance. It is worth reading the Wiki entries for members of the Corinthian Casuals team that day. Hardly a cross section of sporting society of the time. Mostly upper class amateur international footballers, County cricketers, Sandhurst graduates and the odd Lord Lieutenant. Corinthians nevertheless.

A disappointing game and my abiding memory of it is John Toshack winning absolutely nothing in the air against Ian Ure. ( he was a football quiz question at the time, at 6 letters, having the shortest name in the Football League). Anyway, in the Arsenal team that day were Bobby Gould, Arsenal keeper Bob Wilson who TOBW is not named after and winger George Armstrong who, if you add the word Custer to, you get a famous American General.

Brian Godfrey scored the 4 minute hat trick in Preston’s 9-0 defeat of City in 1966 in the game immediately after “Farrell’s match”. Talk about highs and lows, I was on cloud 9 after witnessing Greg Farrell’s absolutely incredible performance in the 5-3 win over Middlesbrough which saved us from relegation and sent them down.Then, next game we go and lose 9-0. In those days I don’t think the phrase “on the beach” had been invented for teams who couldn’t be a*sed when there was nothing to play for but this has to be the most extreme example. Brian Godfrey cost Newport County a record £10,000 when they signed him from Bristol Rovers in 1973

Wayne Fereday. The book was called “England’s Worst Footballers” by Jeff Stelling. He is still remembered at Bournemouth for being spectacularly useless. He had been quick in his day at QPR but he was past his modest best by the time he came here and injury brought his career to an end.

In the list of order of precedence of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths stands at no 5. In 1983/84 we took Martin Goldsmith on a month’s trial after he was released by Cambridge United. Despite scoring 2 goals in a handful of games he was let go and joined Merthyr then Barry Town (where he scored 57 times in 79 games) finishing at Afan Lido

We loaned Christian Roberts to Drogheda United (The Drogs) and later he played for The Wurzels and “Wurzel” is the German name for the Daily Mail cartoon strip character and Basset Hound - Fred Basset.

The Hatters are not just Luton Town but also Stockport County who Kevin Cooper first made his name with. Dave Jones, who had previously managed Stockport, signed him for Wolves as a replacement for the injured Mark Kennedy. Dave Jones signed them both again, this time for us.
