Yeah for the expense of going there and other places in the world to go to I wouldnt rush to go there.
Stayed by Waikiki Beach. Massively commercialised tacky shops everywhere like your normal seaside town. No actually its much more commercialised than any seaside town ive ever been to.
Pearl Harbour was a good day out.
Enjoyed it but wouldnt go back.
I stopped there en route back from travelling in Oz, over 25 yrs ago now. Doubt it’s changed much mind. It is a bit tacky around Waikiki etc and the locals aren’t friendly. In fact, they seem to not like tourists at all. The other islands might be a better shout, away from any commercialisation. It is however a very beautiful set of islands, off the scale but a long way to go for a 2 week trip. Go to Cuba instead
the burger bar in llanelli?
Only for 2 nights on stopover to Sydney 15 years ago. Loved it and long to return.
Yes, as I worked there for a year.
It rather depends on what you mean by Hawaii. If you are referring to the island of Oahu which includes the city of Honolulu and Waikiki beach then probably just avoid although Diamond Head is a must if you are a surfer. I’m afraid tourism has ripped the heart out of this island and it has become a Japanese wedding fest location. The capital was pretty grim with a substantial crystal meth problem and a lot of resentment from the Polynesian people to both the mainlanders and tourists. Waikiki is effectively Benidorm for the Yanks and now Don Ho has died ( the Polynesian Elvis) the main attraction has gone.
Some of the other Islands are stunning although the tourist industry has colonised a lot of the prime locations and it is incredibly expensive. I would say worth a look but maybe incorporate it in with a dual centre holiday to include SAN Francisco.
It has been a while since I was there but I doubt it has changed that much.
Spent a week in Kauai many years ago and enjoyed it but wouldn’t go back there again. The beaches were beautiful , big waves if you’re into surfing but it was really quiet. Everything shut down about half 9 but they were up early. We flew there from San Francisco and it was a 5 hour flight.
I think it was 2015, did a week's cruise around the islands finishing with a week in Honolulu.
It's a bucket-list destination really and the previous comments about Honolulu I'd agree with but elsewhere on O'ahu there are some fine, unspoiled places to see and stay. Inevitably though, they're relatively 'quiet'.
The other islands are all different, a couple with black, volcanic sand which is odd. As I recall, apart from spectacular scenery there wasn't much to do that was different except for the super beaches and wonderful waters with an abundance of fish to swim amongst. An abiding memory for me was a round of golf on a course which skirted the ocean with a number of greens to be reached across open sea.
As someone else said, I'm glad I went but would think twice about making the long journey again.
Stayed there for 4 nights back a 4 years ago inbetween Vegas and San Fran. We loved it, we stayed at the Kahala resort which was about 10 minutes from Wakkaki. Did an island tour and went to Pearl Harbour, lovely people.
The Kahala was probably the nicest Hotel I've stayed in, the pool lead straight into a private beach. You know it's a good one when pierce Brosnon is in the room next door.
Nothing bad to say about Hawaii but it is pricey.
The sort of replies I anticipated, I was talking to a Hawaiian lady once in a hotel on holiday, and said I'd like to go one day. She said there are far better places to go, its far from the Hawaii 50 you see.
i think based on the replies above if on trip advisor Hawaii would be 2.5 out of 5. I know there are some lovely places there, but it does look 'tacky' in parts and the beaches in Wakkaki look heaving and very 'Benidorm'.
I know it's got an unusual state flag for an American state. Good one for one of those trick quiz questions.
sum total of my knowledge of the place though.
I've booked Barbados now (for next Feb, if travel allows). I was going to book Thailand, we love Krabi and Ao Nang and have been twice, as you say stunning beaches and great food and, the 'reserved' nightlife we like in Ao Nang. In the end I opted against a third visit, but will deffo be back, we love it there.
