Anyone done any boxing training ?
When it comes to fitness these guys , especially at middleweight , are about as good as it gets
None of this semi flabby nonsense so many of the heavyweights seem to carry
I was wondering if anyone has ever been a member of a boxing club and done any training or indeed fought at any level ?
What sort of training is involved?
Lots of running I would imagine , strict diet , sit ups , press ups , bag work but I would imagine no heavy weight training as you would need a certain amount of muscle but too much bulk and you can't throw a quick punch ?
The recent death of hagler made me realise what incredible athletes middleweight and lightweight boxers are and what dedicated work must go into their art
Karate exponents and kick boxers are another breed of super fit people
Re: Anyone done any boxing training ?
I went to a boxing gym for a period of time a few years back, not far from you, Bridgend Boxing club down on the way to Ogmore by sea.
Unfortunately I had only been going about 6 months before it closed.
It was the hardest training I have ever done, start with 10mins of skipping to warm up (that alone was a killer)
We would do circuits on the bag, so 1 min hard punches 30 seconds rest, then 1 minute fast punches 30 seconds rest.
Would repeat this for as long as you could (10mins max for most people)
then we would go for a run, around 10 laps around the building.
then finish with ground exercises, so 1 minute of press ups, 30 seconds rest, 1 minute of situps 30 seconds rest, then plank position till fail (aprox 3-5mins most people)
1 minute rest then do ground exercises all over again, 3/5 times
with water breaks and a bit of one to one coaching in the ring mixed in would be about 1hr 30mins, and would do this 3x a week, every monday, wed, fri
I lost 3 stone in those 6 months, and put it all back on when it closed gutted!
Re: Anyone done any boxing training ?
I did some in my teens, St Josephs in Newport, my mate was going so i went over with him. Very hard, shit loads of cardio, brilliant way to get fit though. The boxers you see on TV don't walk around at that weight, they bring it down in camp, loads of them walk around at 28 lb above their fighting weight, especially middle weights, 6ft and 11 stone is difficult, their natural weight is probably around the 13 stones mark, after weigh in they can put on 10lbs going into the fight by rehydrating, sometimes more, they smash the carbs.
Re: Anyone done any boxing training ?
During my heyday, I used to be a real artist in the ring... I was always on the canvas!
No, seriously - I once went 6 rounds with Nathan Cleverly... he never bought me one back!
Boom Boom!
:hehe:

I'd pay good money just to be at the pre fight press conference.

Re: Anyone done any boxing training ?
I used to box as a late teenager in Barry, used to be fairly decent as i was pretty tall ( though i was never going on to make it in the boxing world, i just wasnt that good :hehe: ), used to train a few nights a week, but i didnt have enough nights of the week and had to decide Judo or Boxing, I am afraid judo won, which might have been the right decision as i represented Wales in it
Fitness really is the key to Boxing, of course it helps if you can throw a punch or dont have a glass chin

i guess Boxing could well have been the idea people used for " circuit training "
