Re: Freedom for cartoonists
I think it's probably the child porn element that is banned rather than the cartoon side of it. Just guessing.
Re: Freedom for cartoonists
I think it's more to do with anime and manga depicting lolita porn (or whatever it is called) - the sexualisation of school girls. It's the subject matter that's illegal and not the cartoon itself.

Does that sound familiar?

Of course, and I'd see your point if these satirical magazines were being made in places like Iran.

Freedom of Speech, like the law of the land, and the rights to rehabilitation are essential concepts however and must be stood up for.
Re: Freedom for cartoonists
Muslims dont like cartoons taking the piss out of their religion
The west dont see the rpoblem with satire, its only a cartoon afterall
But then westerners dont like cartoons sexualising young girls
Yet muslims can marry and have their way with young girls
Irony overload

Yes I get that different continents might have different laws, but what difference does that make?
Re: Freedom for cartoonists
Has anyone from the west gone and shot up any of the offices that draw these yet? Therein lies the difference

Two Welsh journals were pulped in 2006 because they printed cartoons depicting Mohammed - where were the politically correct hand-wringers then?

I think the Oatmeal gets this issue pretty spot on, as usual:

Re: Freedom for cartoonists
Surely the reason that childporn comics are banned is because they are seen to encourage an act that could end up seriously hurting a real child. For that reason it makes sense to ban them. I don't see a similar reason for censoring the religious cartoons.
I am annoyed to see these muppets at the French magazine lauded as heroes by so many people though. They know what the reaction will be when they publish these cartoons and it's not just them who suffer. 2 completely innocent policeman were killed yesterday because some pricks like winding up crazed killers.

That was an editorial decision on a low-circulation church newspaper which probably tries to avoid offending anyone.

no there isn't. if the majority wanted child porn laws then I'm pretty sure Parliament would ultimately follow the will of the people. That is how democracy works. The fact is the vast majority of people find child porn repulsive ergo any depiction whether explicit or implied is just not acceptable. The difference here is that we have a democratic process whereas the terrorists do not. They cannot abide different viewpoints from their own warped logic and as such feel the need to kill people.

I think you might be taking it all out of context. I could live in Japan with a cartoonist drawing weird stuff. If a couple of Europeans then decided to shoot a load of Japanese people because they were offended by those cartoons I don't think that means no Europeans could live there.
