Disgraceful behaviour by that company.

Absolutely disgusting.
Prerecorded message as well, Jesus
I watched parliament talking about it earlier, a few of the MP's were saying that some would be " fired and hired " to keep ships running and that practise needs to stop
Appalling. I hope there is a massive backlash against this
Sniffs of a Murdoch style move from the 80's to break the unions grip , in this case its the RMT's turn, who are also busy on other fronts such as London Tube Strikes.
What's also disgusting is the government's failure to outlaw this practice back in November which makes what P&O did perfectly legal.
Bastards
Horrible way to treat your staff.
Their wiki page has been updated showing their number of employees as nil.
C unts
Another Brexit benefit
Are you saying they did not outlaw fire and rehire which is what I think was being talked about in the Autumn?
If so it may not have helped now because they are not firing and rehiring.
They are firing and replacing.
Not that I am saying that P and O's actions are not disgraceful
Looks like P&O has just Gerald Ratnered the brand.
On a personal note They've managed to make me do something I never thought I would, and that's join the RMT.
Absolutely disgraceful move from p+o. Well done to the captains and crew involved for digging in and defending themselves. Shame on the decision makers who made these choices. I know it would never be done, as it's tantamount to declaring war. But I'd bloody love to see the government respond by nationalising London Gateway and telling dp to piss off off and not do business in the UK again
'The firm claimed almost £15m in government grants in 2020, which included furlough payments for its employees.
P&O is owned by DP World, the multi-national ports and logistics company based in Dubai. It paid a £270m dividend to shareholders in 2020.'
DP World sounds like a top-shelf magazine from the 80s.
From The Evening Standard
“These are the very same transport staff praised as heroes for carrying London through Covid for nearly two years, often at serious personal risk, who now have no option but to strike to defend their livelihoods.
“The politicians need to wake up to the fact that transport staff will not pay the price for this cynically engineered crisis.
“In addition to the strike action RMT is co-ordinating a campaign of resistance with colleagues from other unions impacted by this threat.”
Talks at arbitration service Acas that could have seen the strikes postponed broke down last night, because according to the RMT, TfL “confirmed all the union’s worst fears that nothing is off the table in terms of the threat to jobs, pensions, conditions and safety”.
We need this kind of action more than ever. What P&O has done is immoral. RMT is doing the right thing. I won't hold my breath but I hope there is a massive backlash to this but I expect the right-wing to fall in behind the rich, the powerful, and the bosses over the ordinary workers.
In fairness to Starmer, this is a good response and better than that wimp of a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.

And here are the rich and powerful making out that DP World (not owned by Paul Raymond) are made to look like they give a sh*t about anything other than their shareholders, oh and public image. Ironically, they royally f*cked that, not even a person born out of a very special vagina could save them from the P&O debacle.

I have seen the bit in the report, but ths still wasn't a case of fire and rehire because thst means firing the worker and then rehiring the same workers under different terms and conditions.
These workers didn't even get that chance they were summarily replaced with cheaper workers.
When people are trying to defend the obscene wages and bonuses CEOs and other big wigs in private companies are paid, they say that you have to pay the going rate for such talent. What sort of "talent" is required to give the okay both to what P and O did and the way they went about doing it? There are kids who'll be going past my house soon on their way to the local primary school who know that, purely in PR terms, what P and O did was score a huge own goal yesterday. Even Putin didn't have the whole of Parliament against him when he sanctioned the invasion of Ukraine, but P and O have managed it - I still can't figure out whether whoever sanctioned that awful video shown yesterday was affected by arrogance or cowardice, probably it was both, but they were definitely incredibly stupid.
Totally agree. In terms of their methods there is probably a covid element here. "We needed to fire them in a safe manner, which was via pre recorded video etc". Utter fkn arseholes.
I'm on a ferry this summer, but it's Brittany Ferries. East for me me to say but I would strongly urge people to look at them and Irish Ferries and Stena. I can't say Ive heard of worse corporate behaviour than P&O on this
In January 2019, P&O removed all of its vessels from the UK register. They now operate under the flags of Cyprus, Finland, Malta, the Netherlands, the Bahamas and Bermuda.
