Last game of the season - time for some truly boring stats

Next Saturday will see our 95th end of season fixture as a football league club. Generally, the end of season fixture has not been great in terms of results. We've won 25, drawn 31 and lost 38 of the previous 94.

We've played 41 end of season games at home and, next Saturday, will have played 54 away from home. Opening day fixtures are similar, where 43 have been at home and 52 have been away.

At home on the last day we've won 13, drawn 17 and lost 11. Away from home we've won 12, drawn 14 and lost 27.

In total we've scored 105 goals on the last day, conceding 132.

Does the league season that has gone on before have any bearing on the last game? Well, when we've won the last game of the season our average finishing position has been 8th. When we've drawn it our average position has been 11th. When we've lost it our average position has been 15th.

In the 38 seasons following the resumption of competitive football after World War 2, we won our last game of the season 7 times. In the 35 seasons since 1985/86, we've won 13.

The sides we've faced most often in the last game of the season are Bury and Huddersfield (5 times), followed by Burnley, Hull and Man Utd (4 times). Bury, Huddersfield, Burnley Man Utd and Barnsley are the only sides we've beaten on the last day more than once.

This season will be the 23rd time we've ended a season with a different manager from the start. This happened only 6 times up until 1980, 4 times in the 80s, 4 times in the 90s, 3 times in the 2000s and 5 times since 2014.
