My eyes need an overhaul as I think I’ve come to the end of my relationship with my varifocals. I never really liked them and now I can’t get the sweet spot right for close vision and it’s causing my eyes to ache.
I was / am with SpecSavers but it’s been a few years since I was last tested.
I was hoping for a more experienced local optician who might help me with what’s best for me rather than what sells best for them.
Any suggestions in the Cardiff area?
i use specsavers and then send the prescription to selectspecs on line :xmasthumbup: no probs so far and a lot cheaper than opticians every 2 years
I have used R.N Roberts for years - get the full works, and then just asked for the written prescription. Upload it to Glasses Direct, and have 2 pairs from £15. Some really good glasses from £49 a pair also.Quote:

Specsavers are very good and have all the latest gadget's the smaller outfits sometimes can't afford. As someone that has had laser surgery on bothy eyes they have been excellent looking after me for the last 15yrs and do not mind at all if you just ask for your prescription after you've been tested. They have budget specs as well as the more expensive ones though you only get what you pay for and the cheep as chips ones don't last that long. Also, they normally don't charge for small fixes.
I think being as SpecSavers have all my details and have my eye scans I'll get a booking with them this week. As mentioned I can always just take the prescription away. They also have my latest contact lens checks as well so it might just be easier to keep it in the same place.
The vibe from the posts so far is that people are happy enough with them.
I have 20/20 vision, but I still need readers. I get them off amazon and they're all over the house. I've tried wearing bifocal lenses with the main lense non-corrected. Couldn't get along with them though. So now. I'm constantly walking around with classes on my forehead, in my pocket, and on my collar. It's a right pain in the arse. Like now. I need glasses to type this, but I need to lift them up to see the TV clearly.
I am on sofa now on laptop with glasses on my forehead while I type. I can't get a proper focus on the screen as my eyes are out of line / changed prescription with the sweetspot on the varifocals.
I need to wear them to see TV clearly and have a growing problem with a mobile screen where I am struggling with or without glasses to read small text clearly.
I think I might need to get single vision glasses for long sight and readers for close up.
I like Contact Lens' as well and that adds another dynamic as you can't just take them out and pop them in all the time. Last time they prescribed me to wear one contact only, so I have long vision in the eye with the lens and could see near vision with the naked eye. The brain works it out (and in fairness it worked quite well).
Just don't use Tescos opticians. Dreadful.
I'd concur with regards Specsavers. I'm also a new member of the varifocal club and am still not convinced by them.
I went for a eye test at Specsavers, they found some " dark area " in one of my eyes, sent me to see a specialist, ended up at a new-ish hospital, arrive, get seen by specialist, she asks me to kneel on the floor as im a big chap, now this worries me a little, she explains the machine is broken and will not wind up or down, so tall people need to kneel on the floor, great, she looks at my eyes, then announces that the machine is 15 plus years old, supersavers always have the state of the art machines and are always the best money can buy, he machine was really poor in comparison and I shouldn't have wasted her time and just have it monitored every 12 moths by specsavers

A year after that I was sent by my doctor to the place in Radyr following a bleed in my eye.

Since then I've been using the Specsavers at Leckwith as my employer gives me vouchers for VDU glasses.
They have all the mod cons and are very thorough, and picked up on my retina detachment 2 years back.
Had me referred back up the Heath the same day.
So to summarise, any of the above will be as good as you need. Visit regularly. If you cant afford the eye test tell them one of your parents has/had glaucoma. Test are free for family.
