Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
I might move back to Wales one day and daydream about where I might go.
Is there anywhere in the Valleys that's not too dismal? Is there anywhere vibrant, enjoyable or even pretty?
I'm from Hengoed, went to primary school in Bargoed and spent a lot of time with family in Lansbury Park .
Maybe , it's nostalgia or something, but I've actually got quite a lot of time for Lansbury and Caerffili in general. Same goes for Ystrad, Hengoed. Treorchy seems pleasant..... and whilst it's not exactly valleys , I like Tongwynlais and Taffs Well too.
I wouldn't mind finding an older , traditional welsh cottage ...so maybe the heads of the valleys or somewhere like Bedlinog or Deri or somewhere like that.... smaller...less industrial village.
Any hidden gems ? underrated towns ?

I'm thinking about moving to north Wales. Had a gutful of the south.

Bridgend and Maesteg valleys have some beautiful scenery
Nantymoel , Pontycymmer , Ogmore Vale
You can get some nice places very close to Bridgend , Pencoed , the M4 for access
Coast is a lot closer too

With Caerphilly, you could say you live in greater Cardiff these days.
Places like nelson, ystrad Mynach and Bridgend Valleys are very nice but a very poor bus route.

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
Nelson is on the up. Quite good shops and decent pubs. Frequent train access to Cardiff at nearby Abercynon.

I live in Caerphilly but it’s proper suburbia. Not much of that community feel to it. Personally I’d love to move to a little hamlet, with 1 pub and naff all else
Depends what you want from ‘the valleys’ because it’s not as idyllic and close knit as you probably think it is.

I did view a house in Troed-y-rhiw a few years ago but circumstances were different then and I couldn't pursue it. Lovely place though.

Should have never have closed the Nelson station in the first place really

Miskin - 1 pub and 2 churches, vibrant Pontyclun high street next door and close to M4. Just a few minutes from the Vale for your football training fix and a mile or so from Llanerch Vineyard for great food and scenery.

500 homes are being bolted onto the back of Miskin, but agreed its a lovely place

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
I’m still wondering if “Best Place” and “Valleys” should be in the same sentence.

Yes, not ideal on greenfield site but clearly the billion houses being built on the old Llantrisant Road aren’t enough!

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
Rudry, machen, drythen just outside cardiff caerphilly is nice….feels pretty rural but close enough….

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
Expensive though. Although it's dependent on where the buyer is from.
If you want to be very precise in buying a home. Can I suggest st Martin's road in Caerphilly. You get a good size home for your money. Close to both train and bus station

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
I've lived in Pontypridd and Caerphilly - I find Pontypridd much better . just as easy to get to cardiff and houses are cheaper and the town centre is just a lot better laid out.
Currently live in Gwaelod y Garth which is technically in Cardiff, but has a nice village feel to it, and a great pub

Gwaelod Y Garth is nice and the pub is very decent

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
The very north of Cardiff like Gwaelod y Garth, Creigiau & Pentyrch could suit what you're looking for as well, they were RCT some time ago I think

Re: Best Place to Live in the Valleys ?
It's on my list still to move out of Cardiff and it will happen, some decent suggestions on here except Bridgend, having worked in Bridgend for a year, very nice people, however Bridgend itself wouldn't be on the Radar, the town centre isn't very nice although it could be argued that the majority of town and city centres aren't what they were.
