Re: M4 Flyover Port Talbot
Interesting. I was actually reading about the Westway in London again yesterday, a very similar idea that the planners wanted all through London. Seemed a very 60s idea to have these big raised motorway networks. Thank god they didn't take off! Ugly and obliterate communities

Port Talbot Wales
A whole 20 minutes saved?
Well in 1966
Video montage is fascinating.
Motorway in the sky and how a feat of engineering transformed South Wales
That wiped out a community
The M4 flyover in Port Talbot was once dubbed a £5m miracle
"Communities" are overrated. They don't have to be created organically.
For example, the local councils could save so much money relocating and rebuilding rather than propping up ex coal mining towns in the arse end of nowhere.
They should have wiped out the area around the flyover while they had chance.

that's effectively what the Tories expected to happen to the valleys when the mines all closed - it doesn't work like that when real people are involved, rather than numbers on a spreadsheet
I believe there was a plan to do the same to Liverpool at one point.

Labour has closed more mines than the Tories in south Wales.
Slightly off topic, the same happened down the Docks many of my close friends have had to move to places like Barry and the outskirts of Cardiff following the docks morphing into “Cardiff Bay “ Communities, left in tatters.

£5 mill, jeez all that will get you these days is a 600 mtr cycle path in Roath park
Re: M4 Flyover Port Talbot
Coincidentally, I was driving on that section of M4 this week (I rarely do).
When I saw the rooftops right next to the roadside, I pictured this dystopian future world that the planners envisaged: a two-tier world with the rich whizzing overhead going on their holidays; the plebs shut up in their houses getting a few hours sleep before their next shift starts.

According to that report, prior to the M4 being built, "The result was that for a 5½ mile stretch on the A48 the average car speed was 18mph." Locals are now campaigning to be able to drive at that faster speed again.
