U.S. government is manipulating the weather - hurricane Milton was engineered
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2lyzw7xwxo
For now, these kinds of claims are so ridiculous as to be laughable. However in the future, who knows what might kick off as a result of some conspiracy nonsense on social media?

To be fair I think the BBC are simply reporting the fact that Joe Biden had to reassure the dear old American public that this idea is nonsense! I'm pretty sure there must be plenty of rednecks/preppers over there who believe it.

Why is the word "very" no longer considered good enough to use by some people? Using the word "super" instead of the perfectly adequate word that was already in use to describe heightened degrees of something is so American teenagerish - nobody was saying they were super this or super that four or five years ago.

If someone spends the bulk of their time watching and reading US right wing crap then it's bound to rub off eventually.

Yes I've noticed for years that the US right has a large influence on a certain type of people over here.
How many posts did we get on here on things like Hunter Biden's laptop etc - something that basically nobody in this country gives even a fraction of a shit about

Do you not think the US left has a similar influence?

I think what you will find is that the US has a disproportionate influence on every aspect of culture, politics, media, language and every day life. To assume it's just the US "right" is incorrect. It's the "left" as well, and nearly every other aspect of life. Disagree? Of course you will. An inability to find consensus and to demonize the other side is one US import from the left (and prevalent on the right too) that you ably demonstrate!

You have avoided answering az’s question and resorted to the usual swerve with added pomposity.
What imports from the US left have you detected? What do you think of as the ‘left’ in a US context? There is no question of the influence of the US right through social media - led by Trump and the MAGA lot (echoed here by Farage and a many of the Tories), Musk, the fossil fuel lobby, Christian Zionists, white supremacists, and on and on. But the left? I suppose there is some online influence still from BLM, and the Jewish campaigners against the genocide in Gaza, and a few environmentalists, but the influence and noise is totally asymmetrical.
I am in the USA now ( been here 3 weeks so far) and in the liberal/Democrat north east. The two things that have struck me hard are how divorced from any idea of ‘the left’ the mainstream Democrat party is, and how much support for Trump there appears to be in rural and small town America even in states where he is thought to have no chance.

Pompous? I'll ignore that just as you ignored AZ's condescention to what was a perfectly anodyne comment.
It goes without saying that your definition of "the left" isn't a universal one. Just as plainly the American left is different from the Russian left or the French left or the British left, all of which continually evolve too. It's no secret that the American left has been less prominent or influential than most other countries. To be blunt, the American left is typically less left wing than the British.
But that doesn't mean it has no influence. I think it's generally recognised there has been an evolution in the British left with a greater focus on identity issues, theories such as critical race theory, "decolonisation" and the like, many of which have gained oxygen if not origin from the US. Perhaps the best example is the post George Floyd stuff. We saw the now British PM take the knee. That is entirely a US import for example. Even if it was purely symbolic its still a US import. Another example, you say there is "no question" of the influence of the US right on social media. I don't disagree, but it's not the case that the US left hasn't also been amplified by Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and the like, which are often perceived to show a liberal bias (at least pre Musk in X's case)
So yes, just as the US right has influence, so too does the US left. This isn't a question of which is better or more powerful, it's just the reality and I'm surprised you find it so disputable and I'm not sure what part you do? You really think that the great multi dimensional American left has zero influence outside its borders?
Enjoy the holiday! Extremely beautiful part of the world especially at this time of the year!

So how many votes have you cast since you've been there? I reckon it must be in the hundreds of thousands!

Yes it does. It's boring, uninteresting and not applicable. Hardly anyone this side of the water gives a toss, and rightly so.

Half agree with the first bit (it matters as America is so influential) but sadly disagree with the latter. People are obsessed.
People in the UK always been far more interested in US elections than EU ones when the EU was literally voting on laws that impact us.
It's a shame, and ironically the US President isn't even that powerful

I would argue on the contrary, that this is of importance to the whole world! Yes, the idea that Biden et al somehow created the recent hurricane is totally ludicrous of course (although it appears that some Americans believe it!). However with the progress of AI and the immediacy of social media, the potential for fake news to create social unrest and possibly even start wars is, IMO, a frighteningly realistic prospect.
