Victories by five or more goals
On the flip side of my previous thread, if my calculations are correct, Cardiff City have won by five or more goals in 11 league matches during the last 50 years. Nine of those victories were at home (six at Ninian Park and three at the CCS) and two were away.
They were as follows:
5 - 0 v Cambridge United (H, 12/11/1983)
5 - 0 v Wrexham (H, 05/10/1991)
7 - 1 v Doncaster Rovers (H, 14/03/1998)
6 - 1 v Exeter City (H, 01/01/2001)
7 - 1 v Oldham Athletic (A, 16/03/2002)
5 - 0 v Gillingham (H, 13/09/2003)
6 - 1 v Crewe Alexandra (H, 22/10/2005)
6 - 1 v Derby County (H, 29/09/2009)
6 - 0 v Bristol City (A, 26/01/2010)
5 - 0 v Rotherham (H, 18/02/2017)
5 - 0 v Plymouth Argyle (H, 19/10/2024)
How many of those wins did you witness first hand? I was present at ten of them – the only one I missed was the 5-0 victory over Rotherham in 2017.
I can remember getting a text from a mate on the way home from Oldham in 2002. It read: “What was the final score? Ceefax must be knackered – it says City won 7-1.”

Omer Riza has become only the second Cardiff City manager during the last 50 years to win a league game by five or more goals and lose a league game by five or more goals in the same season. Eddie May did likewise in 1991/92.
The only Cardiff City manager during the last 50 years to have won two league games by five or more goals in the same season was Dave Jones (2009/10).

4 or 5. The home games prior to Plymouth, but have a hazy memory of whether I was there for the Exeter game or not. I recall Andy Jordan thinking the ref had blown up for something and whacked the ball into our net, only to realise the game was still going on and that he'd subsequently scored a cracking own goal from point blank range.

The 7-1 victory over Doncaster in 1998 was remarkable because City were terrible that season. It was the year the team drew no less than 23 league games. I think I’m right in saying the finishing position of 21st was the club’s second-worst in its history. However, Doncaster were in an even worse state and suffered a record number of defeats. I think they were fielding a lot of youth team players much of the time if memory serves.

Thanks for this bit of info. I had us down as finishing 20th that season and couldn't really understand why we'd have been 21st, but a bit of digging around later and teams were ranked on goals scored if they were level on points, not goal difference. Time to update my spreadsheet with this.
Below us (just) that season were Brighton and Hull, who we'd later face in the Premier League. I wonder what odds you'd get on Salford, Grimsby, Colchester and Sutton Utd all playing in the PL within the next 20 years? :hehe:
