One for the historians- Previous relegations- when did we go to the last day before?
Our 2 premier league relegations were both non events with relegation confirmed before the final day. I think we lost at home to Chelsea and won at man u but neither mattered.
We've had a couple of close scrapes in the Championship but never gone to the final day before.
Even last time we went down to division 3 in 2000 im fairly sure that was done before the last day. Did we beat Bristol Rovers 1 0 to stop them getting in the play offs but we were already down maybe?
So the question is when have city been relegated on the last day? Or actually on a more positive note when have we only survived on the last day?
My mind is blank!

Apologies if I have missed something really obvious!

You're right about 99/00. We lost to Gillingham in a midweek game before the end of the season. Didn't we lose at Bury in the 80s on the last day to drop into the dungeon?

That’s the only one that went to the last day I can think of out of the relegations I’ve experienced since 1963. 89/90 it was - we lost 2-0 and my memory, which may well not be 100%, is that it never got tense as we conceded early and Bury made it safe in the second half.

Was Luton 82/83 the last game of the season?

Norwich away feels a horrible game for our last day. We need to be at least 3 clear going into that. 4 points really considering our goal difference.

Wimbledon at Plough Lane, maybe?

Yes, it was our last game of the season and we had to beat the team that had won the title. I just had a look at the Official History of the Bluebirds and I think the reason I forgot about that game is because there was never a chance of us winning - Luton went 3-0 up and missed a hatful of chances and our two late goals only made the score look more respectable.
I also had a look at what the book said about the 89/90 match at Bury - apparently, a win in our previous game gave us a “mathematical “ chance of staying up, but it described our performance at Bury as “limp”.

Back in the 73/74 season we played Palace and needed a draw to stay up and send them down. Tony Villars ran virtually the length of the pitch to secure a 1-1 draw and our safety.

That Bristol Rovers game was in my mind as I left the ground today. But in my memory (which is terrible) the score wsas 3-0 and we were brilliant.
I am probably wrong on both counts.
EDIT: I am wrong, it was 1-0. Oh well. There goes a really cherished (but clearly fabricated) memory. Scott Young scored. Unused subs were Brazier, Low and Earnie.
