Re: Where "should" we be?
mid championship with the occasional trip up or down
Re: Where "should" we be?
Low Premiership minimum. The ambition should be where Brighton are right now, stalwarts in the league challenging for European places. Don't forget who barely finished above us in 17th when we went down from the Prem last time.

But there maybe clubs like Sunderland Leeds and the Sheffield clubs who would consider themselves genuinely bigger than Brighton. They probably wouldn't be far off either. Eg are those clubs any smaller than brentford Bournemouth or Fulham?

All of those teams have had successful stints in the Premiership (managing not to get relegated in their first season) and have been serious contenders in the Championship this season (bar Wednesday, who even then are solidly mid-table).
We are grossly underachieving relative to where we should be. Those clubs are not bad models as to where we should be aiming though.
Re: Where "should" we be?
To be honest this is one of my football pet peeves. Technically, no-one belongs anywhere, otherwise there'd be 37 clubs who "belong" in the Prem and there'll be a team in the championship next year who doesn't belong there cos we do but we're not.
I understand why people think like this though, cos most of the narratives around football are about maintaining a hierarchy rather than open competition, and it's only really because we're a historical (and contemporary) shambles that one would think our place is in the championship, but it could be higher if you look at all those doing relatively well in the Prem at the moment.

BUT if all things were equal where should cardiff city be playing their football?
Like Liverpool and man united are premier league however bad things get as they are massive.
Where would our "natural" place be for the size of our club? Mid table Championship I'd suggest?
Top half of the Championship with Premier League ambitions.
Re: Where "should" we be?
If you’d asked me in July 1975 I would have said Division 2
In July 1985 I would have said Division 2
In July 1990, still, I’d say Division 2
Ever since, I’d say Division 2, even after our dalliances with the top flight.
Re: Where "should" we be?
Bottom half championship, top half League one.
Our success over the last 25 years or so has been achieved on the back of having wealthy owners. Take that away (or keep a wealthy owner that doesn’t want to waste money anymore) and we’d drift downwards. It a shame as we did slowly build a good sized fan base but it seems to have been very quickly eroded away.

The funny thing with most things is that you 'naturally' end up where you deserve to be if you run things like a shiit show, no matter what delusions you may have of yourself.
Re: Where "should" we be?
If the question in the title of this thread was asked around 2011 shortly after Vincent Tan completed his purchase of the club, I would have answered bottom half of the Premier League. Considering how much has been spent since then , the answer now should be on a par with the likes of Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford. It takes a special kind of ineptitude to see us in League One when Tan has spent something like £200 million on the club by now.

Agree with this.

The attendance was 23,000 today.

We should be Division 1, and that’s exactly where this team, club should be. No surprise for me if we end up in division 2 soon. I can’t believe how many supporters I respect said we were too good to go down. For me it was obvious from before Christmas. And without spending the likes of Birmingham through at Division 1 it would be no surprise at all to see as in Division 2 within a season or 2. We have no quality I. This team whatsoever.

We have spent almost our entire existence in the Championship or higher.
Re: Where "should" we be?
Cardiff is the 12th or 13th largest city in Great Britain based on population. With that base, City should be a reliable Premier League team with occasional, inevitable trips to the Championship. A West Ham or an Everton. At least.
