Re: Captain For the Season
Alnwick or O’Dowda. No one else makes sense.
Re: Captain For the Season
No one candidate stands out so think it'll be someone we sign.
Re: Captain For the Season
Good discussion on lack of proper captains these days on TalkSPORT last week. Gone are the days of the vocal, inspirational leaders. Your Keanes, Terrys, Gerrards, Adams.etc are a thing of the past.
Anyone seen calling out their team mates on the pitch like they used to is classed as aggressive, in a negative way, in today’s football world.
With coaches micro managing every little detail on the pitch from their technical area, there is less need for the managers voice on the pitch these days.
I don’t think it’s as important a role as it used to be.
Re: Captain For the Season
None of those mentioned above. They're not strong enough personalities, and quite frankly, too quiet on the pitch.
We need a new incoming captain, whoever that might be.

I couldnÂ’t disagree more. Maybe IÂ’m just being nostalgic and you may be right but I loved a commanding midfielder.
I think a leader on the pitch will be more needed than ever, itÂ’s just taking time for clubs to take to new processes.

Clearly missed the point.
Furthermore, the game has changed and the commanding midfielder can’t go flying into tackles and setting the tone, geeing up the rest of the troops like they used. Like a Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard. I’ll lead, you follow types. Those days are gone.
Something else they touched on in the debate was the game was less physical and so those aggressive, alpha male type captains who led the team into battle are no more.
Football is far more technical and tactical these days.

It's hard to captain in the first season when you're new in the door.
Re: Captain For the Season
A centre midfielder can’t grab the game by the “scruff of the neck” anymore. Slam into a tackle, maybe take a yellow to get the crowd up, drive forward with the ball and draw the opposition to slam into you. Those days are gone. Football has evolved. Often for the better but in terms of inspirational captains and leaders it is certainly now poorer.
Re: Captain For the Season
Ng, he can give himself a bollocking when he gets booked then :hehe:
Re: Captain For the Season
We haven’t signed him yet.

I remember Beckhams nauseating public resignation as England captain.
Always thought the manager was meant to choose the captain.
If he stays its probably going to be O Dowda.

For me we haven't got a natural leader in the pack so anyone of the following maybe a candidate
Alnwick
Chambers
O Dowda
Fish
Out of the above I think i would opt for O Dowda
who would your captain be for the coming season ?
Nobody currently at the club.

its a shame how no one springs to mind now ralls has gone... would he have gone if the bale thing had happened already ? ralls obviously not going to take the huge cut in wage, which is a shame, its the players who got us down id have prefered ralls stay and help us get back up, financially hes going to do what he has to do... lots of other clubs will pay more
but yeah laugh at ng but if you want passion and commitment i think ng fits

Ng's no leader, his antics are embarrassing enough as it is, never mind if he were captain

I think you're right, that kind of player has gone. The closest we have to that kind of player is Robertson but he's more petulant than commanding and he definitely doesn't strike me as the inspirational type
Of the current crop I can see it going to O'Dowda or Alnwick, possibly Chambers on seniority. Bleak.
Re: Captain For the Season
Reckon it might be Colwill (R)
Will make or break him

He has a Cardiac Arrest and has had an Implantable cardiovascular device (defibrillator) fitted which will keep his heart going. He can play football with this in place if his doctors approve.
A Cardiac Arrest is not a heart attack.
