Bloke is an absolute fool. He was an interesting character about a decade ago. I'm pretty sure he even appeared on question time once?
His comments about the women's euros were totally inane too.
A great example of someone for whom twitter has been a dreadful platform for.
Interesting in what way James? I'll go out on alimb here and say Barton has always been a snidey little fuuck.
Stubbing a cigar out in an apprentice's eye at a Christmas do is pretty telling.
His acquired French accent when at Marseille was pure comedy although unintentional on his part.
You are right he did appear on Question Time where his fake intellectual image was hopelessly out of his depth.
Strangely, Question Time have also had Russel Brand appear once... hmmmm.
I guess that after years in dressing rooms talking about things no one else was interested in talking to him about, he got the mistaken impression that he was a lot smarter than the average bear.
A truly smart person would have managed their money well during the high earning days, not needed to have to do shock jock tactics to stay relevant, and then saved a half million payout to a DJ whose opinion impresses no one anyway.
Yeah he's always been an aggressive character. But let's not pretend he wasn't interesting and considered such, or stood out for talking about things most footballers weren't.
He was interesting enough for the guardian to report on him becoming a member of the national secular society in 2015.
Interesting enough for Stephen Evans, the society’s campaign manager to say its “great to have the Queen’s Park Rangers midfield general on the team”.

Interesting enough for the same paper to give him an article on his thoughts on rainbow laces

Obviously our views on people will change over time, but when they do, I don't think we need to re-write history and pretend they were always thought of that way. I think calling Barton "interesting" in the past is a fair assessment really.
I may have this totally wrong and happily stand corrected.
Regarding Barton, one man's interests isn't another's. If you are interested in the thoughts of a football player just because he happens to be a football player then fair do's. Personally I couldn't give a fuuck about Bartons views, that said I really couldn't give a fuuck about a host of celebrities who spout bollocks when given an opportunity by the media.
Back to Barton on his actions I'd have to surmise he's a horrible, bullying, gobby twat. The fact he's shown some sensitivity about homophobia should be recognised. I wonder if can do so when discussing a racist motivated murder or will he refer to such a murder as a "scrap"?
More interesting for me is you being influenced by the Guardian about what to do and think, it's a genuine surprise.
I never had you down for John Smedley cardigans and Birkenstocks whilst scurrying about Waitrose searching for a rare bottle of Albanian Red as recommended by Jay Rayner?
I live and learn every day.
