Merthyr off to winning start.
Beat Southport 2-0 this afternoon and a crowd of close on 1800.
On the balance of play I’d say they were a little bit fortunate with the Merthyr keeper Cogman looking like man of the match up to 80 minutes, but two late goals gave Merthyr the 3 points. Our old youngster Twamley scored a good goal late on to give them the lead. So 3 points to start the season is the start they wanted but already it’s obvious to see it’s a big step up.

I'm upset I'm a Southport supporter. Still, it's only the first game

I’m going to the Merthyr v Scarborough match , my other half is from Scarborough
Hoping for a entertaining 4-4 draw

No light years before that. One of the traditional set

I’m the opposite of that. I hope they win everything. Smudge is a friend & I’ve followed Paul since his time managing Cinderford Town. He’s a very talented manager / coach. I’d love to see them in the National League. Sadly I think all the travelling they have to do will be detrimental.

Am I correct in thinking only a few years back they were playing home games at Taff's Well?

Yes, they did play there one season when they reformed after going bust. I think they had to start in the Western Counties league and they didn’t have permission to play at Penydarren Park.

Re: Merthyr off to winning start.
Hard fought 3 points. Probably fortunate to take all 3 as Merthyr keeper was Motm.
Can tell already its going to be a lot more difficult at this level. Southport were one of the teams towards the bottom end of the league last year and they were well organised compared to the teams Merthyr faced last year, when they usually blew teams away at home by HT.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme to score the Scarborough goals.

1800 is a fine crowd, fair play. You start to see a potential route to the club being a league club on grounds like that.
I'm pretty sure when Merthyr were in the conference maybe the early-mid 90s, the crowds were around 500-600.

Higher than what Newport averaged at that level for instance
Also not far off what a certain north Walian club were getting before the North Americans took over

I think late 80s/early 90s(?) Merthyr average attendance was around 1500 odd. They were pulling crowds of over 3000 for the odd game.
When they're winning the appetite is there, when they're not winning...

Yeah, a potentially big club. The valleys is around 600,000 people I think. That a fair sized city. Of course, Ponty is closer to Cardiff, and somewhere like Cwmbran has no connection to Merthyr, but still , big club.
All their crowds there. Finished fourth in the conference in 1992..

I agree, went to a few games around that time and the gate tended to be around 1,500 from memory - it looks to me though that the potential is there for them to get bigger attendances now even with the fact that there’s hardly any clubs in the division close by them.

I think they've reached the top with the current league they are in?
I don't think financially they'll be able to compete with some of the clubs in their league and I don't see them sustaining their current attendances if they fail to keep winning, historically the club have never done so.
Merthyr is definitely worth a visit as it's a throw back in watching football, old cabbages like me can reminisce about the facilities, ground and atmosphere.
That all said, I watched a Merthyr league game rather than going to Penydarren Park as some of Merthyrs supporters are the most annoying baastards on this planet. Saturday afternoons up there could be mistaken for a dementia day care centre.

Yeah I go sometimes and I enjoy it. Have to say in recent years I enjoy it more than City home games, which like many I've found pretty dull and places like Merthyr are a nice change if you find the top divisions a bit corporate
Meant to post this link earlier.

I was 11. Just started first year in comp.
The Welsh cup win earlier that year was the start of a golden period for the club. A couple of promotions followed and finished 4th in the conference.

They were a good team. Andy Beattie and Kevin Rogers were more than decent players.
Keri Williams and Dai Webley were also more than decent drinkers too.

That was some achievement. I remember 3 yrs earlier I went to Jenner Park to watch Barry Town play Reading in the FA cup. Reading won 2-1.
