Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
Hannah Hampton
Chloe Kelly
Ellie Kildunne
Luke Littler
Rory McIlroy
Lando Norris
I couldn't have told you what the three women do if the BBC article didn't say.
Gotta be Rory with the grandslam although you could make a case for Littler.

It's a meaningless bauble.

does anyone still bother with this rubbish
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
You could make a case for any of them, but I hope the winner isn't another female footballer.
Really hope it's Rorys time this year.
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
When I was interested in this any Brit who won the driving round and round in circles World Championship won it.
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
Haven’t watched it in years

Absolutely no one cares about SPOTY anymore. It became irrelevant years ago, and has become even more so as the BBC have lost the broadcast rights to major sports events bar Wimbledon.
Quite how they justify the overly lavish show that they put on, I have no idea.
It is sad really as it used to be a must watch years a go :frown:

The Lionesses winning the Euro final was apparently the UK’s most-watched TV moment of the year. While female football isn’t popular with men of a certain age and disposition, it’s definitely popular with the public.
The title of this award has sometimes seemed a bit silly. After all, Ryan Giggs won it once.

Was it really 'a must watch' years ago?
I don't remember family or friends ever talking about it, and if they watched it, it was just because it was on when the box was on!
I also think the title of the award grated with a lot of people - based on very non-scientific coffee chat at work.
The idea that Nigel Mansell could win any award for his 'personality' made it a total nonsense decades ago.
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
The term ‘personality’ obviously isn’t meant to be taken literally. They just use it to cover both genders.

Wouldn't 'person' do that?

Or as a member of the royal family on horseback

Well I remember it being that way as it was an annual round up of all sport (and the only one, on the three channels available)
But that was in the 1970s.

No it isnÂ’t. Most clubs get tiny crowds for womenÂ’s football. The average for the WSL (so the very top level) is under 7,000 which is lower than the previous year.
That is just rubbish.
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
The most deserving of this award hasn’t even been quoted. Kevin Sinfield.

Agree. If there is no SPOTY Peace Prize why bother?
Re: Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
Some curious claims in this thread.
Apparently, women's football isn't popular despite the fact that female footballers have won this award on two of the last three occasions thanks to votes from the public, and the fact that the Lionesses winning the Euro final was the UK’s most-watched TV moment during 2025.
Also, the 1970's were apparently the halcyon days as far as this award is concerned - a decade in which the winners included a horse riding princess, a female pentathlete, a Formula One driver, a figure skater, a female tennis player, a cricketer who played in just 8 test matches and trio of runners.
