What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Forget spurs in the FA cup
Forget all the big names
For me it was our seasons in the abyss , to quote a slayer album
Exeter , hereford , Chesterfield, Lincoln
I wet myself several times in those dark days , being chased around a DIY centre opposite Hereford train station long after the police had got our lot back on the train to south wales ......just me and two young lads from aberdare and twenty ginger haired big eared blokes from hereford with hands like shovels

Thinking about it, you could have produced a guide to branches of Mothercare around the country!

The irony about the Spurs game is that I was with my ex's nephew, who is a Spurs fan and whom I had travelled to the game from Oxford where he lived. I was with him in a pub frequented by Spurs supporters and trying to mask my Welsh accent as best as possible when ordering at a crowded bar. And as the pub was so crowded we decanted into the access area to it just off the main road and whose wrought iron tall gates were closed to separate the locals from the City fans passing on the other side. It was starting to get nasty and I was trapped on the wrong side of the gates both physically and metaphorically.

That was a very scary day , I was glad we had so many nutters as well if I am honest
A group of city fans in one of the pubs were less fortunate

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Bout 9/10 yrs ago, I was working near Sheffield and went to Brammell Lane to watch the City.
Didn’t have a ticket so went in one of the home ends and kept my head down.
Unbelievable game, which we won 4-3. I tried my best to contain my emotions, but sure I was rumbled by some surrounding fans, so got out of there toot sweet.
I got away unscathed, but wouldn’t chance it again. Very hairy experience.

I guess you refer to Spurs in the 1978 league game, the year after knocking them out of the FA Cup 3rd round? I went up on Tommy Morris' buses from Pencoed, 13 years old, on my own. Driving close to WHL, a Spurs fan pulled out a knife..! The start of a series of Rourke's Drift moments that lasted the whole day. Frightened me to death!!

I was also at that game. I was based at the Merchant Navy training school in Gravesend, Kent. I travelled to WHL with three other cadets. They were a bit naïve (so was I at the age of 17!) and were all wearing City scarves. They soon hid those scarves though as we travelled on the underground with hoards of Spurs fans. Spurs fans had infiltrated the away end with us and were right loons.
The two Spurs fans stood right next to me, as brazen as could be, were telling me how great it was at our place (Ninian) with all the rocks and pieces of concrete flying back and forth on Sloper Road, they both looked in their 40's.
I also travelled on my own to Stamford Bridge, at a time when Chelsea were mental, again, I think that was about '78? They had played Bristol Rovers away at Eastville the Saturday before and rioted, in the mayhem a WPC got knocked unconcious. I saw it all on the HTV West News (my grandmother always tuned her ariel into the west country reception, don't know why! :hehe:). So I had built up in my mind that it was going to be hairy, and it was!

we were in the Queen Vic pub that was attacked by a big mob of spurs before the game. They didn't get into the pub but a few poor souls outside took a bit of a slap.
the tennis courts afterwards were fun and games

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Only once have I been scared on a away trip, 2006 away to Plymouth I was 13 and I had a slap off a Plymouth fan who was at least 40, twat.
I wasn’t the sort to give it the big one, looking for trouble. just me and a few friends were walking pre game singing Cardiff songs, not causing harm.
Often think I’d love to have a chance to go face to face with him now

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Hairiest moments involved being surrounded by foes inside grounds at Anfield (Wales - Scotland), Den and White Hart Lane (as referred to earlier in thread). Most concentrated number of Cardiff nutters assembled back then were at Chelsea and Newport.

If that's the game where they clinched promotion, yes, it was scary. We were relegated as well. Seemed every Brum fan was p*ssed. Ran onto the pitch after each of their goals. Was in a section with a mate that def. wasn't an 'away' section. Seems as though in the late 70's, early 80's you could get into anywhere in the ground if you traveled independently - which we invariably did !

Yes we lost two nil
We had a slim chance of staying up if we beat them , hence half of south wales being on that steep away end behind the goal
The crowd was only 15000 mind you , we had over 3000 of that
The week after we played them leeds came to town and it was a full scale riot with one young lad sadly losing his life when a wall collapsed on him
I remember the policing being dreadfu and totally incompetent inside and outside the ground

Birmingham had David Seaman in goal that day.
Our relegation was comfirmed at Plough Lane Wimbledon a few weeks later the same day as the Bradford fire..

Forgot about that one! Mitched off school to attend (13 again). Stood at the front of the Kop, "our" end :hehe:, with what seemed the whole of Scotland there. Watching the bricks being lobbed back and forth at the back and the steady stream of mostly Welsh fans being carried out with blood pouring. Always remember a 30/40ish Jock telling me that I was lucky that Scotland won else he'd of kicked the shit out of me. As previously said, TWAT.

The Chelsea game referred to above was in October 1976 I think, we lost 2-1. Anyway we travelled up to North London to stay with an old school friend for the weekend. Train to Liverpool Street, then Tube to Fulham Broadway, all fine until about four stops before our destination. Then the train slowly filled with mad Chelsea fans, some had knives! When the train pulled in to Fulham Broadway and the doors opened the two of us bolted out of the train, out of the station being chased by probably 50 of South London's finest.
As we came out of the station and turned the corner we ran in to about 1500 City fans being escorted by the police, cue mayhem as all hell broke lose. We skulked off to safety, but we had tickets in the Home end, so were very, very quite for the rest of the afternoon. The only time I have ever been scared at football.

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
I have found swansea a bit butterfly inducing on occasions
As a 15 year old boy I caught the X2 from bridgend and it pulled up at the quadrant centre
We were very wet behind the ears and walked into the centre which was rammed with the locals , we tried to act normal but we were bricking it
Luckily Cardiff's lunatics turned out the Jack's ran out to meet them and everything turned to dust
We decided to get into the train escort for the walk back to the station instead of waiting around for the bus back to bridgend

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Orient away in 1988. First ever away game and being young and stupid decided to go on the train on my own. Vaguely knew other city fans at central so hooked up with them. Unbeknown to me Chelsea were playing West Ham the same day. There were older Chelsea fans from wales on the train and basically we jumped off a moving train at Newport as they started swinging for us. Arrived late in London, got to Leyton station about half hour after game had started to be greeted by about 80 angry looking West Ham fans in opp platform. Game with Chelsea had been cancelled so they were at ours. 6 of us calmly walked as all sorts rained down across platform. Usain bolt wouldn’t have caught us as we left the station.
300 or so cardiff still trying to get in as we arrived who had just given the West Ham we encountered a good seeing too, so wonder they looked so happy. Pitch invasions by ours during game chasing West Ham out of the ground, cardiff fans stabbed outside. I was very glad to get to Paddington that day.:ayatollah:

I got the train from Cardiff to Rock Ferry and then double-decker buses took us to the ground. On the way, we saw nothing but Jocks, however, when we arrived outside the Kop End, you could see Welsh scarfs hanging out of those narrow, slit-like, windows they have high up. "Great!", I thought, the Jocks could have threequarters of the ground for all I cared, as long as we have a full Kop End of 20,000+ taffs, who cares!
How wrong I was... we were squashed up in the far right corner (looking down at the pitch) and they hurled everything at us, bottles, empty cans, half-full cans, lighters, coins.. the lot!
I was 16 at the time and nervous as hell - but one funny moment was a City lad, Ching, perhaps some of you will remember him from the 70's and 80's (from Canton)? Well, anyway - the missiles are flying over towards us and he stands up on one of the crush barriers and shouts to us.. "C'mon, there they are. Over there"! - he was urging us to have a go at them, but it was the they way in which he felt the need to point out where 18,000 Jocks might be.. we were bloody surrounded by 'em! :hehe::hehe:

Re: What's the most scared you have ever been following city away ?
Frankly any small northern town in the 80’s was scary.
Not sure if they lobotomise them all at birth and then fed them steroids but it certainly looked like that was the case and then there were the men.
Grim up north did not even begin to cover it.

I was at both of those games, Birmingham and then Wimbledon when we were relegated in 1985, New street was always an interesting place back in the day
