How do the different customs etc enrich our society? It's minimal, if anything. Does it work the other way? Are there people in Mali telling each other to open their minds to beans on toast and Shed Seven? If you get something out of it then that's nice but you can be a white man who only listens to Coldplay, reads Len Deighton and has a Sunday roast every night and you can still be conscientious, imaginative and useful.

A lot is made of diversity and perhaps that's because it makes us feel better since immigration is an economic tool and steeped in superiority. Why would they come here if it wasn't so bad elsewhere? We know it and they do too but it seems like we don't like to admit that. Even that clown from the Greens said so himself. Well, good for us. Thank your lucky stars and enjoy your Laotian curry and appreciate the nice people who drive our buses but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful or our lives suddenly take on a new dimension. Most are here because it's a trade-off.

I'll speak for myself then, maybe that's what i should have done with my original post. I love Diversity, i seek it out, it's something that gets my attention, whether that's through travel, food, music, or just finding out about people. If people only want to listen to Coldplay, Eat a roast every night and read Len Deighton, then more power to them. We should all be able to do what we want to do, obviously within reason :thumbup:

Irrespective of how people arrive diversity is part of life

Cardiff is built on different cultures and to a greater or lesser extent so are loads of other places

Nothing or no one will ever convince me a young girl going into town on the weekend for a night on the piss had similar probability of harassment in the 60's, 70's, 80's as they do in the current decade. Not even the Guardian or BBC stats so we'll have to disagree on this one.

The different cultures arrived because of economic opportunity (and they weren't collecting benefits in the Boriswave). In Victorian times we had open borders, but that wouldn't work now.

FFS Britain has always been a melting pot. Have we had significant immigration since the 1950s - yes. Has this allowed the UK economy and social fabric to grow and develop to be much better than before - also yes.

The concept of national identity wherever you live in the world is a moving feast. It is largely subjective and often based partly on myth, selective historical indoctrination and stereotypes.
Nations are simply defined by red lines on maps and individual human attributes are far more complex and less homogenous once they are freed from state and religious yokes.

I miss the traditional British values where you could express yourself freely without fear of causing offence.

I miss calling my local Chinese take away "the chinkies", the Indian shop owner "the pakis" and referring to any woman to as "luv" "sweetheart" or "daft slag".

In fairness since the late 70s British values have turned to shiit.

I'd bring back tv programmes like Mind Our Language to demonstrate how open and tolerant we were to "darkies" and "wogs" coming over here.

I don't get your argument. We all know we have plenty of British nonces, murderers, criminals and scum. We have absolutely no need to bring in any more. Anyone here illegally should go, anyone that has come here legally and committed a crime, should go. Doesn't seem even unreasonable yet that sort of thinking will be called racist.

If we could get rid of the British wrongun too then i'd be all for it.

Cardiff isn't anywhere near as diverse as other parts of the country. Just because things might not seem so bad here doesn't mean in other parts of the country people don't experience immigration, particularly of the illegal sort completely differently.

It depends where you are comparing Cardiff to ..


Its not as diverse as London , Birmingham or Manchester but its percentage of non white residents is higher than Bristol , Leeds , Newcastle , Glasgow

How much immigrant crime compared to crime by non immigrants has happened over last 30 years ? I would imagine you could find out

I think its completely unreasonable and certainly illegal to " deport " someone who has come to the uk legally and lives here because they have broken the law ?

Someone comes here from Iraq , fleeing Saddam Hussain .......is legally resident in the uk and for 15 years hes worked in the NHS as a nurse or physio

He stupidly has a few beers at a staff drinks evening , drives home and hes over the limit

You want this person sent back to Iraq ? Hes living and working here

Thats clearly plain silly

Haven't had a curry in ages. The last kebab I had (many years ago) ran straight through me. What an enriching night that was.

Technically, and not that I'm advocating this, but you don't need immigration for kebabs and curries; you just need to go and learn their techniques and bring them back.

They are only fair points though as they match the current laws and processes in UK immigration. If you enter illegally and cannot prove a legal reason to stay, you will be deported, if you legally settle but commit a crime which has more than 12months imprisonment you will also be deported. That sort of thinking will get you a job at the Home Office, rather than being called racist. Perhaps this is one of the reasons migration levels are at their lowest since 2012 ,although a decade of poor economic performance has done great work there too.

The killer of Henry Nowak was British born, and the Northern Ireland attacker was apparently a legally settled refugee, so illegal migration has nothing to do with either case ,but let's be honest, it's not even worth pretending it ever did at this point.
