I thought Sam Curran could have played the conditions better rather that backing away.

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Pope out of series. They should bring in Foakes but more likely Dan Lawrence will play.

I like your way of thinking regarding Foakes.
Brave of Pope as well
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Can't see them bringing in Foakes as it won't do Bairstows confidence any good. They'll probably play Dan Lawrence but I wonder if Joe Root might move back up to 3, even though it's not his preferred position.

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Brook will bat 3. Mo, Wood and Woakes in for Jimmy and Tongue.
Big, big call
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
I’d have kept Tongue and binned motormouth Robinson
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Looking at the forecast, I like the look of the draw at 7/2
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
They had to bring Foakes in. He's the best keeper we have by a country mile and I reckon his batting is up there with most of our batsmen.

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Jerusalem and GSTQ.
FFS!
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
The reason I posted the above was I was really looking to get behind England in this test.
Then in the space of 3 minutes my mood completely changed.
Edit: Eng win toss, Aus currently 6 for 1, Broad gets Warner.

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Mark Wood’s first over was the fastest at Headingley since records began (fastest 96.5 mph)
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Bairstow is shocking behind the stumps!
Should be five down at lunch.
Wood is like lightening :yikes:
Edit: he's just taken Smith caught behind
85-4
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Joe Root puts a simple slip catch down now!
Woeful Fielding!
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Too many dropped catches this series. Root should have taken that.
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Just seen Bairstows 2 drops as well. One difficult one easy. Awful decision to put him behind the stumps.

Root out of jail, took catch next ball...just!
I'd give him a day on the fence.
That'll learn 'im!

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Wood on fire 🔥
8 down now, Cummins LBW for a duck!

If only Root hadn't dropped that catch. The Aussies would be in huge trouble.

The first one, yes.
This is a poor an England fielding side I have seen for a while.
The mistakes have been regulation catches too.
Aussies throwing the bat at it now, and why not.
Even if they are bowled out, the current conditions are favouring the bowlers.
Hope Wood gets his five.
Looks like the natural successor to Anderson.
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
10mph quicker than anyone else, that’s decent & gets results :hehe:
-
Re: Official Ashes Thread
Quite a collapse. England have to take advantage of they're going to get back into the series

Brilliant from Wood. Hes 33 and unable to play regularly due to injuries. Hes no successor to Anderson though. Totally different option as player.
Ideally one of our express place bowlers would always be available ( Wood , Archer , Stone) but they are all sadly injury prone.

Australia tail couldn’t cope with his searing pace. - if only ….

Re: Official Ashes Thread
England close 67-3. Australia could and probably should have been blown away for 150 if it wasnt for the dropped catches.
England need someone to get a big score.

It would be somewhat ironic if Australia had a first innings lead through someone adopting the Bazball strategy while England are being more defensive!

Cricket is not football, it is a closed shop due to the insane decisions of the ICC (and BCCI). I love cricket, it is a special sport in worse hands than football.
I remember playing an age group final in Aberdare in 2005, we'd finished by the time Giles hit the winning runs and everyone went mental. There were hundreds there, everyone went bonkers. I often see this issue on twitter etc and it is almost always started by people who fundamentally don't like cricket. "Maybe I'd be interested if Wales had a team" etc. Bollocks.
Nice story which illustrates your point really well.

33. He's only a pup compared to Jimmy mun!
Agree they are different types of bowlers entirely, I meant as their talisman.
England's problem (apart from their awful fielding) is that they don't have a top spinner like Lyon who can hold his end up and give these guys a breather.
They get over-bowled and end up on the treatment table.
Anderson mind is a freak.

England's problem this summer (apart from the injury to Leach), is they've been so sloppy. They've done enough to win games and they keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Bairstow has had a nightmare series - gone for 12

Re: Official Ashes Thread
Yeah terrible from Bairstow. Wonder if his dismal displays behind the stumps is getting to him.

I think so , been skittish all series , perhaps his injury effects his mobility behind the stumps
